1968 FE 360 4 Barrel

Post by rfp23 »

I am trying to install power steering to my 1968 F100 360. I removed the parts at U-Pull-It from a 1971 F100, but unfortunately, the mounting bracket is wrong, so I went back to find an FE engine. While there I ran across a 1976 F250 that appears to have an FE engine and the bracket appears that it might work. But, here is the questions - this engine has a 4 barrel intake manifold! I did not want to spend the time today to remove the manifold, but does anyone have knowledge of what FE engine Ford would have been using in 76 with a 4 barrel? Do you think it will work on my 360 and if so, is the (any?) added performance worth the trouble?

Thanks,

76 f250 had a 390 4v option as well as a 460 4v option.
If it's 390 you can use it, and myseft would as I think the 2v MotorCraft carbs are POS.. But that's just my opinion.
If your engine otherwise stock??
BTW, eninge code for the 76 390 4V would be "M"

The 360 is stock. I am attempting to slowly give the truck a cosmetic restoration into a weekend driver (20 footer). I will add dual exhaust, so the 4V carb would go well.

Thanks for the info and code. I might go back and get it today.

Thanks,

If you do, its a big job pulling an FE intake off. The push rods go through the intake manifold. That means pulling off the valve covers, and rocker arms, to remove the pushrods. :o
1968 F100 Took the running 390 out, and installed a Built 300 with AOD.

OK, y'all talked me out of it! Ha! Sounds like more work than I want to do for the return in performance. I see your point about how the FE intake fits under the valve covers, etc.

How much trouble would it be for me to change to an automatic in lieu of 3 on the tree. There are a lot of F100s in the U-Pull-It lot with autos, so the steering column and trans might not be too hard to come by.

Thanks for the advise.
