C6 - Only 2 gears

Hi:

I seem to have only two gears working in my C6. If I manually go through the gears, 1 and 2 are the same, there is no shifting between these. I don't know if its 1st or 2nd gear, however. When I put into drive, again, only seems to have 2 gears.

I think I have 1 and 3 or 2 and 3 working.

I have a read a few threads and alot of suggestions point to the "vacume modulator." What this is, I don't know but I'll look for it. The thing that is puzzling to me is the fact that 1 and 2 are the same when I manully select the gears.

Any suggestions?

It is a small canister behind the pan on the bottom side of the tranny. It has a vac line off it to the carb or intake. Maybe someone can post a pic for you.

When you remove it, there should not be any fluid in it.
There are two types: One is held in by a bracket similar to what holds down your dizzy. The other type screw in.

And is a defective modulator associated with having the same gear engaged when the selector is on 1 or 2?

Mine did that when I got it.

Band was broken, I find out this is reasonably common.

Thanks! The Band is part of the modulator?

Excuse my ignorance but I'm just that, ignorant, when it comes to transmissions.

Nope, the band is inside the transmission.

It holds the drum to engage second gear.

If thats all thats wrong, it can be changed (carefully) by pulling the valve body, intermediate band adjuster and servo, then you can thread the new band around the drum.

LOL. Just kidding. That looks intimidating. Thanks for the information. Probably not a job I will do myself but I want to get educated so I don't get ripped off.

One simple thing to check also is to make sure the downshift tube connected to the carburetor hasn't slipped off due to a bad bushing. (I'm assuming the C6's use them)
