Steering Gear Box Type (Bendix or Ford)

Post by Jkittle »

I have a 1969 -250 with a leaking power steering hose. When I went to order a new one I was told that there were two manufacturers of gear boxes for that year. I can't tell what it is. Can anyone tell from the picture which one it is or tell me how I would know.

You're gonna need a better picture. Preferably of the whole thing. Look at the driver side motor mount tower. If it comes straight out to the frame and uses the rear holes then you've got the Bendix box. If it curves forward and uses the front frame holes then you've got the Saginaw box. The Saginaw is longer than the Bendix. That is why when you do a manual steering to power steering conversion, if you use the Saginaw box, you'll need to use a steering column out of a truck that also had a Saginaw box. The Bendix box is the same size as the manual box but they're prone to overheating. They were phased out in 68-69.

There's a write up in here about it. look at power steering conversions and you'll see for yourself.

Bendix P/S: 1966/67/68 and 1969 before serial # G30,001

Bendix P/S Seal Kit: C6TZ3E500A (includes sector & input shaft seals)

Green Sales is one of the few that has it: 800-543-4959.

The Bendix gearbox is much larger than the Ford gearbox and has four ends that can be opened up.

The Ford gearbox only has two open ends, at the input and sector shafts.

That's a Saginaw box, evidenced by the two-bolt top cover. The Bendix boxes have a four-bolt cover.
