Trying to figure out which transmission I have. It is an Auto. According to another page on this site it is likely a "cruiseomatic" but I don't really know what that means.

Nevermind, you have a '72 with a 302.
Should be a C4 but check out the bottom of this thread and compare your pan and the number of bolt holes.

Barry - It is the C4. THere is a salvage yard near by with a c5 ($250) and I wonder if switching them would be the answer?
Thoughts?

Well, I haven't heard a lot of good things about the C5 plus they are more expensive to rebuild. It used a lockup converter which you can't get anymore. Outside dimensions are the same as the C4 except the pan has a big bulge in the center. I suppose it would be ok to slap it in there and drive around for a few years. Personally, for a couple more hundred I'd have your existing C4 rebuilt which includes the R & R.

I assume, despite the year, any tranny shop should be able to do the rebuild? Any idea what something like that would cost?

If a tranny shop can't rebuild a C4, they shouldn't be in business.
The last C4 I had rebuilt was about 10 years ago and that was around $600 installed with a new converter and some hard parts.
Thanks! We try our best, sorry I don't have a more up-to-date price.

Ask around localy and try to find a shop that will give you at least a years warranty on their work.
A good shop won't be afraid to stand behind their work.
