need to rebuild tranny next weekend and need instructions!

Post by 1971ford »

need to get my c6 tranny rebuild next weekend in order to take it to a desert race and we just found out that the TCI tranny rebuild kit i got doesnt have a manual or any instructions at all.
how am i suppose to know where every little gasket goes

anyone know of a site with instructions or something :?
i checked out amazon for a rebuild book but they take 5 days to process before they even ship.

and TCI's site has an instructions page for part numbers... they dont have my part number :x

I've heard good things about his videos. Don't know if you could get it by this weekend, but if you're going to do it yourself, I'd definitely check into this one.

There is a haynes tech book and an ATSG book. I would think a good local book store could get them (B&N ect). I know summit racing has the ATSG book it may even be under a TCI part number. You really need both of them...

BTW I have the TCI in my truck and my advice is return it and get your stuff from Jay @ Broader Performance.

It is the "Master Racing Overhaul Kit".

The valve body kit that is included is worthless as far as firming shifts.

The seals are already bleeding pressure and causing delayed engagement and low line pressure.

I am going to have to pull it and do it again.

The tech support is non existent...

Do yourself a favor, get one from Jay.

were not trying to get firmer shifts with the valve body we bought, we bought it so we CAN shift :D so hopefully thats not an issue.
i called TCI and got to a actually person in a couple seconds. i dont think that was tech, havent tried getting to tech yet.

Do you have a snapress? If you can, get someone who's done autos before (preferrably a lot of them) to help you with it. There are a lot of tricks and things not apparent the first go round (a simple trick might save you a day of frustration trying to get a part to line up).

You don't need a manual. Parts only fit one way. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. No two seals are the same size, replace seals with what fits. Torque VB bolts based on their size (usually 60-100 in/lb).

My advice is tear it down keeping all the subassemblies in exact order and layed out on a HUGE, clean workbench. Order just the parts you need (likely drum seals) and a transgo shift kit.

Autos are simple. A slipping auto doesn't mean the clutches are shot, it means something is causing the clutches to slip. Could be a bropken part, but 9 times out of ten it's bad drum seals. The snapress enables you to replace drum seals. They're a major pain without one.

Good luck!

Ryan,

I'll make you a deal.

I just picked up a set of shop manuals off ebay, and I will let you borrow the manual that contains the instructions for rebuilding the C6.

You cover the shipping (both ways) and it is on it's way tomorrow. If you are interested PM me your address.

Regards,

Eric

thanks for the offer but i did order a c6 rebuild book. can probably do most of it by seeing how it comes apart but got it just to be sure and to know the right torque specs.

im a little scared to find out why it seems to be slipping. because if its a broken part then that means we wont make it to the desert race. we shall see
