Would this even be worth fixing

Post by spartman »

Found this on ebay and so far it seems like it might be a good deal.

Only problem I have found so far is that noone seems to sell the 2wd output shafts, only the 4x4.

Course I have only searched Google for about an hour on it.

Nobody makes the 2wd mainshafts. I have lots of parts for them. If you get it, figure out what it needs and let me know. Gears $20/ea, shafts $45/ea+ the ride.

I would doubt a broken mainshaft, but it's possible. a broken input or cluster is more like it.

We had a '93 F150 XL with the 4.9 and 5 speed. It ran very well for a long time, but we discovered a little flaw with them the hard way. The factory puts 3 little rubber plugs in to seal the shift rail holes. Over time, those plugs shrink and as the tranny spins, it will weep all of its oil out and cook the tranny. Warm Mercon flows pretty well! <LOL> Anyway, those trannys are a little hard to find around here at a decent price, so it took us about 8 months to locate one and it was still $650, had been rebuilt before, and was a little noisy after we put it in. We ran it a couple years and traded the truck off in '03. You might want to be sure and put a dab of high-temp RTV around each of those rubber plugs when you repair the tranny, or maybe even substitute metal plugs.

I also heard a rumor that pulling even light loads in overdrive can warp the case on these tranny's and cause them to go out prematurely. I can't confirm that one myself though because we always towed in 4th.

Just thought I'd pass along a story that may save you mucho time and money. Good luck with it and hope this helps.

:hj: Hey Dustin, will the M5R2 bolt up behind a 4bt, or do you have to use a adapter plate? :?

Industrial diesels don't have bellhousing patterns. No matter what you mate one up to you have to use an adapter. With the 4BT, the most common and best working 4BT adapter out there is the small block ford stick pattern.
