Hey all,
I just noticed that in the late 70's the gas tank on a stepside had the filler tube in the rear fender, driver's side in front of the tail light. Am I right that the frame is wider on those, or could a guy mount a tank back there somewhere to get it out of the cab. Thanks,
Ron

No, the rear-mounted tank on the '73-'79 trucks won't fit into a '67-'72 truck, due to the rear frame section being 4" wider. The only exception to this is if you can find the rear-mounted auxiliary tank on a Highboy. The '73-'77-1/2 4WD trucks had an in-cab tank and had frames with the same width as ours, so the auxiliary tank would be an easy swap, but they're kinda hard to find.

re: Gas Tank Q
When you say they won't fit, is it b/c the tank is too big or the space btwn the frame and fender is too big?

re: Gas Tank Q
Since the rear of '73-'79 frame is 4" wider, so is the tank....it won't fit between the narrower frame rails of the '67-'72 trucks.

re: Gas Tank Q
I ran across this while doing some research on fuel tank options for the 61. Since the frame widths are the same on the 67-72 as the 65 this should work for our trucks as well.

I am still a little confused in the whole gas tank respect as to how the hell you end up setting up the gauge sender and the fuel line? with an entirely different tank and set-up. Also fabbing a new fuel door would be kinda hard ?
