re: question about rear wheel hopping
Hey Barro...
Several things can cause rear wheel hopping...
Bad shocks, or a busted shock mount.
The rear end not being aligned properly... etc
One thing most people don't think of, that causes tire hopping is tire tread.
Having traction tires on the back can cause severe wheel hop.
My '68 CS used to hop really bad when I'd get on it, after I changed to street treaded tires, it stopped.
Now I can light 'em up without any hop at all...

re: question about rear wheel hopping
I'm trying to eliminate it as well, but without some kind of traction bar it's pretty dang hard. Some say that a 4-link rear end would fix it but that's about $2,000 and I'd say not even worth it. One thing that helped mine a lot was new leaf spring bushings. Go for the polyurethane ones from energy suspension. When I took mine apart to replace them the old ones almost fell out, thus having lots of slop in them and causing even more wheel hop.

re: question about rear wheel hopping
Yep mrtleavitt, bad bushings will definitely cause it for sure...
Adding a rear stabilizer will also help a lot as well.
My '68 F-250 CS has two sets of leafs...
Not a helper spring, but an actual 2nd set of leafs...
The rear end of the truck is as stiff as an 8"x8" beam, until you add the camper... then it rides really smooth and solid.

re: question about rear wheel hopping
barro,
Is this an F-100, F-250 or F-350?
Need to look at the rear wheel bearings possibly.

Yes, I forgot about the wheel bearings too. Check those, I had one going bad and that didn't help at all either.

yeah the leaf's are probably wrapping up. called axle wrap. very popular in the offroad racing world. solution is a two link. not too hard to make either if you have the welder. or you could have one made or order one or whatever
i dont know why a stock truck would do this though, in offroad racing it happens because of the powerfull engines installed and when running leaf packs they will start to wrap. so you must have something going on
like bushings and stuff that others mentioned

Out West here we call them "Traction Bars"ezernut9mm wrote:get some slappers. the leaf springs want to "wrap" up on them selves when under hard acceleration.
You can get them at most any auto performance stores http://www.jegs.com/p/Lakewood/744083/10002/-1/10083 or look at the pictures they are easy to build.
Pretty common problem with leaf springs + HP with some traction...

re: question about rear wheel hopping
A new set of leaf springs stopped mine completely. I can power-brake it and smoke then or just stomp the gas and light them up now with no wheel hop.
I used new bushing as well so it could have been either or both
