dana 44 closed knuckles oil type?

Post by fomocoguy »

Here's a question for you Dana 44 fans! So the other day I filled my front end and knuckles (3500# dana 44 closed knuckle), as it was low. I used 80w90 wieght gear oil. Then I read somewhere that 180 was the factory stuff. I just want to be sure I didn't put too thin of oil in it before I go through the trouble of changing the leaking wiper seals.

Also, the knuckles have sight plugs for filling. Do they share the oil with the diff, or are they seperated by a seal? If so, is the oil for the diff a differant wieght than the oil for the knuckles? Thanks!

Been a few talks on this issue. Do a search if needed. Few have said 140lb and few that have said packing grease and a few that have mixed both gear oil and packing grease. Gear oil is the recommended stuff but if the seals are wore and/or the ball surface is groved then the gear oil will leak. I use packing grease.

The axles do not share gear oil between the third and the knuckle. They have seals inside the third behind the carrier side bearings.

Thank you! Hopefully the seals are only leaking badly because I put 90w in them. I'll suck it out and put somethig heavier in there.
