speedo cable question

Post by SteveC »

IM on break from work so ill keep this short.

I this after noon found out that my speedometer is WAY off from what i thought it was saying around 25-30 but i found out im going 38 since i got a nice lovely 219 dollar ticket for speeding.

The speedometer pointer bounces at low speeds and im guessing is in accurate at all times is there a way to make it more accuarte??

I dont have stock tires and dont know the size right off hand and can post them later.
Any help to get this sorta resolved so i dont have another ticket would be welcomed and apreciated.

Thanks again

when the speedo needle bounces, normally means the cable is dry and sticks for moment, then releases sticks again etc. Get some graphite from hardware or lock shop.
undo the cable housing from speedo end remove the cable wipe it down with clean rag, then squrit some graphite in housing. Start feeding the cable into housing applying graphite as you do. this should solve the bouncing, if not you prob need a new housing and cable.
The accuracy of your speedo may be the finial gear ratio to speedo gear miss match.
Hope this helps that a hell of fine in this economy.

thanks i figured that is what i needed to do. I know that the gears are all factory the only thing i changed was the tires which are taller. dad said that will throw off the speedometer.

I will graphite the cable and jsut try to remember that its off a bit. and if the cable is bad ill just wait to get a different one when i go to put the np435 on it.

Thanks for the help and ya that ticket is pretty high but im just gonna pay it and be over with it.

If you can prove your speedo is off and prove you fixed it, you could probably get out of the ticket. Either way good luck with the repairs

Can i change gears in the transmission for the taller tires with the 4.10 ratio

It would be worth it to try and get out of it. Your insurance premium will go up $$$ with that ticket for several years.

And yes, taller tires will make your speedo run slow. You can check by how much with this sites Java applet:

well i pulled the cable out of the housing today it was pretty dry i sprayed it down with graphite lube and sprayed it into the housing as i fed it back in. took it for a spin and it only bounces a little at first till you get to 15mph and then it evens out. Even when it does bounce its not as bad as it was

.
That shouldn't matter beings that the speedo cable connects to the transfer case and not the tranny.

Should connect to the output shaft of the tranny.
