I recently picked up what the PO told me was a 69 F250 highboy with a 67 F100 cab. Thanks to the great info on this site I was able to find the VIN on the chassis and confirmed that it is actually a 1970 F250 with a 67 cab.
So here is my question, I pulled all the numbers I could find for the drivetrain, since anything is possible, and my guess is that I have a D44 front and D60 Rear. The tag on the front axle implies that it has 4.09 gears but looking through the spec sheets here on Fordification, none of the Dana's have 4.09 gears. FYI: All the housing numbers I recorded below where found around the outside of the covers.
Also, does the 'L' on the one corner of the rear axle housing (top or bottom left I don't recall) imply that it is supposed to be a locking setup? If so what was used back then?

Your rig if it is all stock has a front D44 w/ open 4.09 R&P, a rear D60 w/ 4.10 R&P and eithet open, trac-loc or power-loc carrier. The t-case should be a Dana 24.
No the "L" on the housing doesn't mean there is a locker. Does the rear have a tag attached to the rear cover? If there are no tags then there is a chance things have changed over the years.

There is a good chance things have changed alright. No tag on the read axle.
Can you explain the difference between trac-loc and power-loc are they both limited slip? If I pull the cover, is there an obvious distinguishing feature, if it isn't open of course?

Trac-loc and Power-loc are both clutched lockers. The Power-loc is the more aggressive style. In the pictures below the top one is a Power-loc and the bottom is a Trac-loc. The Trac-loc you can clearly see the spiders and side gears. The Trac-loc takes twice as many clutches/steels then the Power-loc. They are both easy to rebuild, but do wear out over time. They are good for solid ground traction.
