Rear Axles (need help)

Post by jguajardotx »

I got a new 3rd member for my 67. Old one was leaking bad. Old one was a 28 spline count. New one was "supposed" to be 28 spline count as well. Once installed the axles go all the way in, but will not grip 3rd member gears. It just seems to be metal rubbing against metal. I counted the teeth at ends of axles and they are 28 count. Could I have been sold a 31 spline count 3rd member or are there other reasons for the axles not gripping?

I have asked this question on here before but no luck. Hopefully I worded myself better this time. Thanks

hate to be the one to bring bad news, but...
I wasn't sure if the axle spline diameters where different so I went and checked the 2 lockers I have. 1 is 28 spline, the other is 31. The side gear in which the axle engages has a bore that's about 1/8 bigger than the 28 spline unit.. So there's your problem...

I learned this one the hard way too. :( I always test fit an axle before I install a center section. To do it on a Ford 9" is bad enough but I did it on an Eaton 2 speed in a big truck.

I have swapped axles from 62 to up into the mid 70s. If it doesnt fit, either your cluster gears are stripped or you have the wrong axle for your differntial. 28/32
