Truck should be running with the engine warmed up and the transmission in park. But I don't know about the capacity.

what i do to warm up the transmission so you get a proper reading is drive it around the block then once your parked shift it down all the gears then back up to park and check it.

Chris,

"Uncle Chilton's" sez' your 70' should take 10.5 quarts, (it's wrong though)....
I just did the 71' Chero and after draining the torque converter it took me around 12 quarts.
Tranny cooler and size will make this differ.

Give it at least a few quarts though before you restart it.

I start the truck, shift it through all the gears, and let it idle for a little bit.

Then with the truck running I check the fluid while the truck is in park.

That's what I do. Or I check right when I get back from driving somewhere while it's still hot.

Of course, the other debate is what to use in a C4. After a lot of research all over, I concluded that Type F is still the right choice, even in a rebuilt C4. I ended up using Amsoil SuperShift which is their Type F product. Frankly, it shifts a little TOO firm for my taste.

Took me 11.5 quarts to fill 'er up as well, but that was with a deep pan.

Check hot, after cycling through all the gears, then leave it in P. Parking brake for good measure and I guess wheel chocks if you are paranoid and/or have a crappy P-brake.......
65 f-100 SWB, 240 I6, T-18, now swapped to C4 with difficulty. Yeah, I know. Its a 67-72 site. But my frame and entire drive train are just like yours!!!!
