noisy tranny? or throw out bearing?

Post by bike5087 »

Hi.

Does anyone know what might be causing noise from near clutch release arm while in gear and in noodles, unless you push on clutch pedal - even just slightly?

Thanks - I guess I'll just live with it. Should I be able to move the clutch release arm by hand (up and down) when I get up under there? Or is that too loose?

I got the same noise. I'm just trying to decide if I should pay a shop to change the throw out bearing, or crawl out from under the truck with a tranny on my chest.

My experience with this is no you should not.
There should be more resistance than that.

So what do you think may be causing the clutch arm to be loose like that?

Am I reading something backwards? I thought the throw-out bearing just sat there, not spinning, until you depressed the pedal to put it in contact with the spinning pressure plate. My experience was that a bad throw out bearing was quiet until you pushed in the pedal. The way I read the question, it quits making noise when the pedal is pushed...or am I reading it wrong?

Yes, it stops when the clutch pedal is depressed even just slightly. I was looking at an LMC Catalog and noticed there was some kind of anti-rattle spring clip associated with the clutch release arm. Maybe I am missing this?

There are two types of spring retainers used, One is a wire clip that goes between the two holes on the throwout bearing arm and clips to the tang on the pivot in the bellhousing and the other is a spring clip thats riveted to the center of the arm and slides into the pivot on the bellhousing. Both secure the arm to the bellhousing differently, if either type is bad the arm would just pull out of the bellhousing or make such a crunching sound that you'd think it was exploding in there. I've even had a rattling heat riser make noise like a bad throw out bearing. I pulled the transmission out 7 times ( a NP 435 4 speed) before someone else with a fresh ear noticed that it wasn't coming from the bell housing area. Also another area to check is the pivot itself. It's riveted with 2 rivets to the bellhousing and they do have a tendency to crack in the middle and break.
