rear wheel leaking

Post by mike73 »

There is some type of oil leaking from my passenger rear wheel. It is almost like gear oil. Have not taken it apart yet but whatever it is it seems to be comeing from the hub and running down my tire on the inside and there are 2 big spots in my driveway. Any ideas what this could be? FInally got the tranny to stop leaking and now I have a new leak.

Probably an axle seal. Possibly brake cylinder leaking.

If it is brakes it will have very little odder.

If it is Axle fluid it will stink like all hell.

also check the axle breather for plugs. if its plugged it can force gear oil out of the axle seals.

:yt: It is the "bolt" that holds the splitter bock for the brakes on the housing.

Yep its axle fluid but the seal on the inside seems OK. I think its the bearings, the seal around them seems to be a bit warped. Cant get it off though.

Finally got the bearing off. It is what is actually warped. Had to machine the darn thing off. What a pain.

A warped bearing? I haven't heard of that.
You'll need to press or have someone press the new bearing on and I'd grab a $5 seal and replace it too while you're at it. Does the axle look OK where the seal rides or is a groove present? If there is a groove, a new seal probably won't seal and you may need to get the axle built back up and then machined back down to spec. I've also seen rear end housings that are warped from people welding on them. It's nothing that you can really see with the naked eye but they go through seals in a hurry.

Yeah the inside of the bearing was dry as a bone. The meatal piece that seperates each individual bearing was broken. I also grabbed a seal but I cant seem to get the old one out. Will work on it more this weekend. Had to heat up the other bearing and press it out. Gonna take the new one and have it pressed on.

When I pulled the hub off a piece of the bearing fell right out. It was the piece that wepperates the individual ball bearings.

i had to chamge a bearing once or twice. i had to press them on and off of the axle. the seal has always been pried out witha screwdriver or a real seal puller tool. it looks like a small mountianiering pick kind of. it is hooked on both sides.
