C6 speedo "head"

Post by brainfart3 »

ok - i'm stumped...
swapping a later C6 for the failed COM - having difficulty locating the slide-in speedo gear assemblyfor the C6.
Local wrecking years have a plethora of later C6's - speedo gear/head as part of the cable - slips right into the trans - but the other end slips onto the speedometer.

My COM cable - and replacement C6 cable from partsamerica.com - is screw-on at both ends..

anyone know where i can locate the C6 slip-in speedo assembley w/screw-on at the tranny end??

ARGH!!!! and i broke passengers top exhaust pipe bolt - broke 2 drill bits and an ez-out... <sigh> replacement manifold is only $220.... :(

but i'm not trading the '67 for a computerized POS!

The transmission-end of the speedometer cable for Ford C-6 transmissions have two different attachment methods. A cable end that is clamped on is usually found in a transmission with a long extension housing. The screw-in type is found in trucks with either a short housing or 4WD applications.

My 72 FE short tailshaft C6 has a clamped in speedo cable on the drivers side. My 68 FE C6 short tailshaft has a screw in type on the passenger side of the tranny.

brainfart,

No way I'd pay $220 for them unless they were headers.
Here's the general search engine for them,

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dl ... category0=

but I'd also advise on getting a used one from a member here first.
My luck with newer "pot metal" manifolds isn't very good! :(

thx guys - guess i'll scour the wrecking yards a bit more.
this C6 has a short tailshaft with a slip-in/clampon hole on the drivers side.
the COM had a screw-on speedo cable on the passengers side.

metal tag on this trans says PGB AC7 and 1022.

for now - i'll jusdt slip in the speedo cable i picked up at the salvage yard - at least it will plug the hole in the tranny.

exhaust - thx for the ebay link - hadn't thought to look there first..
headers locally are $150 - but not for automatics....

Had the same problem while doing my 4x4 conversion.

I just used a pair of pliers to twist & pull the metal speedometer ends off of two cables, and pushed the correct end back on to the cable that I'm using.

If you take your time, it seems to work just fine.
