Water cooled Transmission

My '67 F-250 had a water-cooled Transmission in it...had heater hoses running to it...! Any one ever seen this set-up before..? I have the Ford manual for that year, but, says nothing about this set-up in there.. Any idea was it is...? Thanx.....Tommyg

i got one of these as well. cruise o matic. I had a heck of a time getting a tranny pan gasket for it locally luckly National parts depot had one.
Over all not a bad tranny for every day use

heater hoses are you sure they are 5/8 hoses? or are the hoses coming from the bottom of the radiator? and then to the trans. get a pic of this if its heater hoses and where they hook into the transmission. there cant be anyway this can be true. the transmission runs on transmission fluid and the fluid is usually cooled by air through a trans cooler.the coolers are usually in the bottom of the radiator but can also be put into the transmission cooling lines anywhere. maybe someone has hugh heater hosed lines going to and from the cooler

This truck was used for something heavy..! The tranny oil circulated thru a cooler where one side was for the oil and the other was water!Was mounted one the side of the tranny and looked like a P/S cooler... The truck has 8 leaf springs, air-ride shocks, and the rear bumper would extend out about 4 feet from the truck, don't know why this was...Am now in the process of doing a research of the owner-history of the truck..am back 3 so far..also had duel gas tanks...!

My '65 CS had 10 leaf springs on each side! I wish I had it today.

What part of Florida are you in?

We still see a lot of older Fords here in Central Florida used on the railroads by CSX railroadand a few other companies, (the extension of the frame sounds just like on used on the railroads).
Also could be an old FPl vehicle like my old Bronco was, they also used a lot of modified Fords.
Although I've never seen a tranny cooler located at the tranny with radiator water lines plumbed to it like you've described.

1967 trucks DID come with a water-cooled transmission. There is an external heat exchanger on the side that the tranny lines go to and the coolant is teed off from the bottom of the radiator outlet and goes back to the exchanger.

Here's a picture of the Tee:



This system works by taking water from bottom of block, running it thru the exchanger mounted on side of tranny, then to the bottom radiator hose (like picture shows). The tranny fluid only comes out side of tranny into exchanger and back into tranny.

I too have the same set up. We were stumped, then thought we figured out why it was there, then second guessed it. It's an ugly ass set up for sure, and I'm fairly certain mine was replaced with an inappropriate T fitting.

Here's a video of the upper part of the path. At the bottom it T's off again and goes to either side of the tranny.

The trans should be a cruisomatic

The cooler should be mounted on the pass side of the trans

The drains on each side of the engine block below the freeze plugs will have fittings screwed into then

A 1/2 in tube snakes around the oil pan and connects the 2 drains

It then goes into one side of the trans cooler

coming out of the cooler is another 1/2 in line which snakes around the oil pan to the lower radiator hose

The lower radiator hose is 2 piece with a steel connector which has a nipple coming off it that the return hose from

the cooler connects to
