Anyone done a tranny rebuild before?

Post by 69rangerman »

Now that I've dropped the insurance and it's sitting for a while I'm thinking about if I could take apart and re-assemble my fmx tranny.

It's got a few leaks and it's the next thing that's going to go (Engine and rest of drivetrain have been dealt with). I'd like to keep the original motor and tranny together if possible. What am I looking at here?

Do-able? Kits are 150.00 and TQ's are less than 100.00. My labor is free.

'Preciate any thoughts

if you are just after fixing the leaks the pan gasket is probably the thing to replace. other leak spots are the front and rear seals. for rebuilding it is pretty simple for most transmissions. just take them apart keep the parts in the order they came out in. clean them up replace the seals and clutches then put it back together in reverse order. i have done a c4 a 727 and a buick dynaflow inside of the clutch drums are spring loaded pistons that have seals in them in most transmissions. you have to compress the springs to release the snap rings to get the pistons out to replace those seals also.

I had my transmission rebuilt a while back, and in reading up before I had it done a lot of people were saying the FMX was a real kick in the pants to rebuild. It sure beat the crap out of the trans. shop I look it to, and they've been in business since the early 60's.

Of course, mine was a lot more than the $250 you'll spend, assuming you can get the thing back together. It made me almost dizzy seeing everything that was packed in those things!

Good luck! :pop:
