What get me is the pan leaked after they messed with it and yet they never saw the plug in the bottom of the pan. Shady work I would contact Aamcoavyctes wrote:I've been dealing with a leaky tranny pan that started leaking about a year after I had it serviced at Aamco (fluid and filter). Since cash has been tight lately I decided to fix this problem myself this weekend (got an early start).
This part was lying in my trans. pan

Just as a bit of Trivia, the man that started AAMCO and MAACO was the same guy...

If you have a Cottmans near you my local one did my C4's Rebuild 1 1/2 years ago, still works like brand new. cost 950 w/new transcooler lines.
Only thing i wish they had done was locate a kickdown rod as someone removed the one that was on the truck for some dumb reason.
Hahaha. Bet it is only that they don't do proper prep is why their paint jobs fail every three years.
The trans thing has to be lazy mechanics. A friend had MAACO paint his van, every time the paint failed early they resprayed it free for him.
AAMCO is owned by some other big bussiness now who doesn't give any ripp, bet they own jiffy lube too.

As a mechanic I've seen a few apprentices get scared, thinking they screwdup, and throw all the extra parts back in, and put the pan or cap on and hope to blame a future failure and not themselves. THat may be what happened a few times but for 36 years? Still pretty cool to have though

re: This part was lying in my trans. pan
Yeah, it's a neat bit of history trivia... Now I have another problem. The pan seal wasn't the only thing leaking. There is a leak coming from the filler tube. It looks like it had been pushed over out of the way at some point, so I pulled it back to where it looked like the tube was going straight in, then took a piece of wood and a rubber mallet and tapped the tube back in, but it is still weeping out of the tube, like it doesn't have a good seal. I'm not sure if I should just dismantle the mounting bracket from the motor, and pull it and check it out, or just order another one, or what. Anyone ever have this problem?

That was one of the options I was wondering about. I've already been shopping for replacement filler tubes, without much luck. Anyone have a suggestion for an online retailer who would carry the o-rings, and tubes in case I have to replace it as well? Thanks for all this info by the way, it's greatly appreciated.
Chris.

It's a C6. I'll pull the tube and inspect it, might be it only needs an o-ring. I'll holler back as soon as I can get it out and clean it up and take a look at it. Thanks much,
Chris.

I simply don't trust transmission shops at all. It took 17,000 miles for the lockup converter to start working again after rebuilding the A4LD in an Aerostar I once had. I went to a shop that had great reviews, BBB endorsement, everything. It leaked, it banged hard 1-2 even on light throttle, and for almost $1500 paid, they should have done it right.
If I ever need transmission service, I will pull it myself, buy an old bathtub, stick it on the front porch, and rebuild it with a quality kit. I'll buy any neccessary tools to get it done, and I'll know it was done right. And for a few hundred bucks instead of a few thousand. That or I'll drop it off at a shop that only does rebuilds, and certainly not a chain shop. Carryouts on RWD 3-speeds cost a few hundred. Overdrives a bit more. And there's no reason a junkyard core for $60 at PnP wouldn't be a good start for that, especially if I wanted to upgrade to overdrive.

re: This part was lying in my trans. pan
I think I'm going to have to replace this filler tube. Appears to be crimped from being bent out of place, which explains why i couldn't get it to seal. Are all C6 Filler tubes created equal, with respect to the length of the tube, and the mounting bracket (ie will any C6 filler tube mount to this 360 and be long enough to reach)?
Fordman, you mentioned you may have one. If you think it would work and it's in good shape, let me know how you wish to proceed if you want to part with it. I'm not sure of the forum rules here, do I have to post this in the parts wanted forum?
Also, when I go to insert this new tube, is there any recommended sealant to smear around the o-ring area to help seal? I'm really wanting to nix this leak in the bud, it's about ruined my garage floor. The whole time I thought it was just leaking from the pan (which is where I was trying to keep a catch basin), it was leaking from this filler tube and dripping onto part of the frame and running of at different points (depending on where I was parked, as my garage floor is slightly sloped due to some settling), so the leak wasn't consistent. Been pretty darn aggravating.
Thanks again, you guys have been a tremendous help.

the one i knew about was damaged. i went to pick it up and it had a cut in it. i think some one thought they had to sawzall it off. when you put in a good tube you should only need the oring to seal it up. i would put some grease or oil on the oring before you try and put the tube into the transmission. a dry o ring is harder to put in without messing it up than a oily one.
