Trans locked? ; rear wheels don't turn fwd or rev
Can someone offer me any suggestions on how to proceed? This happened to me yesterday.
I had just driven the truck, all was fine. After stopping for an hour or so, I tried to start the truck. It didn't but it did make a strange sound. I thought the battery died but it tests OK. Tried to pop the clutch in reverse but the rear wheels skidded. Tried to do the same in 1st, same thing.
The column shifter and linkage appear to work fine.
Before I start tearing things apart, I think I have 2 problems but want to be sure; 1st is the starter which is easy enough. 2nd is the trans, internal failure, locked fwd & rev gears? Tks

yeah, I'd guess just a bad starter. Normally when you pull/push-start a vehicle you have to drop it into 2nd or even 3rd gear...1st and Reverse are just geared too steeply to spin it over enough to get it going. That's why you always put a truck in 1st when you park it. Ever put your tranny into 2nd on a hill (when it's not running)? Even with the engine off, the truck will start rolling.

yep try and bump start in a higher gear to get it started. like Keith said, 1st and reverse are way too low for that.

i'd take the starter out first and check it. if its stuck out you could drag it around the world and it wont change

Ok I don't know if this will help you,but this happened on a 76 /390 3 on
the floor, the shifter has some wear and when I got the truck I was told
that the rearend was out. Well after a battery install the truck moved
freely around my yard ,I did not drive it on the street because I did'nt
want to pay for a tow, so after I had it about two weeks I got ready to
move it and it would not move, it cranked right up but would not move,
so I turned it off and I sat there thinking on it for a few minutes. And I had
a flashback , remembering when I was 18 I had a 71 swb that I had put
a hurst shifter in the floor and the trans levers got moved to the wrong
positions I got out and had to force the levers to the nuetral position, one did move
easier than the other, so this is what was wrong with the 76 when it was
locked down and would not move . It felt like the rearend was out or locked up because you could start letting the clutch out and it would kill it
and would not move! See if both levers on the trans are in the nuetral position, even if the shifter is moving them some .

Cut ( FOUR ) pieces of an old ford truck frame that has been junked, fit them to the inside of your good frame, add weld and bolts, the leafs are now inboard, time for the (big WIDE tires)!

Here is another scenario. If the bearings between the input and output shafts go bad the two shafts can weld together. You are now basically stuck in high gear and if you put it in any other gear it will lock up and it will not move plus if it started you would kill it trying to take off. It happened to me once on an F-600 4x4. It's a wild story I'll tell you some time.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Heres you an another scenario..
Back in '98 I was getting ready to leave a friends place when the Truck would NOT move it would start and when I tryed to move the motor seemed to be being held back and would not go...
Well after thinking it was the Trans or the Starter Stuck on the fly wheel it was found that my rear Brakes had Locked up on the Truck.
We replaced the Rear lines and Brake Cylinders along with new brake parts.
All was fine after this.
Not saying this is it but it is something you would NOT think of and would be something I'd check before I took out the Trans.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions.
dduude and Keith were right, it was the starter.
When I pulled it out and bench tested it, it was dead. Just to confirm, I push started the truck, no starter, and it fired right up. A quick trip to the parts store for a starter and all is well.
Thanks to all.
