Hi All

I've got a vibration in my truck and I don't think it's the good kind. '71 F250 with a 360 and C6. New engine with 10k mi, tranny needs a rebuild due to slight slip second gear to third, no leaks in the rear end and the drive shaft doesn't seem to have any play in it.

On the freeway from about 60mph up I feel a vibration in the steering wheel about once per second. Gets a little more pronounced as I speed up. Seems to diminish when I take my foot off the gas. Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

A vibration in the steering wheel will usually indicate that there is a problem there, in the steering.
Jack the front end off the ground and check:
1) Your tie rods.
2) Wheel bearings.
3) Steering box.
4) I'd also have the front alignment checked and front tires checked for balance.

Have or check the out the front tires for a separation of the outer tread and casing.

tossed one of the lead balancing weights from your wheel maybe :?

check your tires first. thats the easiest thing to check.

I agree. Front end problems sound most logical. I would suspect tire balance out or maybe a wheel bearing. Another possibility is that the dust edge has rusted off the brake drum. My 72 has that problem, so the brake drumis out of balance causing a jiggle in the front. Just my :2cents: .

A rhythmic vibration would be an alignment thing, or at least, that's my guess.

Or, you could have a mariachi band under the hood.

Thanks for the reply's everybody. It never occured to me it might be coming from the front end. Truck tracks straight as an arrow, only problem is it doesn't want to return to center. Think that might be a castor problem. Got a new steering box on it. Will start with getting the wheels balanced and check the tread for seperation.

make sure your king pins are greased and turn freely, is the 1st thing I check on king pin truck, bushed or bearing,
when I get a compliant of not returning to center. Then the alignment.
