5 speed from 88 w/300ci into a 72 with 3 speed and 240ci

Post by kilog55 »

how much work and frustration would be involved with switching from the Ford 3 speed to a 5 speed out of a 88 think its an 88. anyway it has a 300 in it i have a 240 so bellhousing should stay the same.

i imagine the newer ones are hydro. clutch?

As far as bolting up as long as the 88 is a small block it will bolt right up.

The clutch will probably be hydraulic, and you would need to make modifications to your truck to make that work.

'M5R2' breaks down as:
M=Mazda
Good write up, but some things are not correct-

"5=5-speed
R=rear wheel drive
2=2 wheel drive
The gear ratios are:
First 3.75
Second 2.32
Third 1.43
Fourth 1.00
Fifth 0.75 "

M5R2 breaks down as Mazda 5 speed revision 2, the M5R1 is the ranger tranny of the same design. Also, the 5th gear ratio is .8, not .75. The ZF's have the much better .75 overdrive.

In the M5R2 and ZF installs into bumpsides I've done I was able to use the stock shift boot and hole size. If you have a 4 speed tunnel cover you can cut 2 inches or so out from the rear of the shifter hole and weld it back in forward the shifter hole to move the hole back the required amount. I didn't use the stock crossemembers though and fabricated new using the appropriate drivetrain angle for the truck.

I mount the hydraulic clutch master as far from the master as possible to give extra room for the brake booster and to avoid cutting the reinforcing rib apart that's on the outside of the firewall.

I wrote the article seven years ago and broke down M5R2 with the info on the internet at the time. It's been pointed out to me before that the 2 is for the second revision. The gear ratios were also from the internet. I enjoyed having the trans in my truck. With the SEFI 5.0 Mustang engine in my truck and the OD ratio in the M5R2 it helped me get 19 mpgs...not bad for 4.11s in a bumpside.
