the slip shaft has a shaft that goes into the transmission. the bolt on yoke is a ujint that bolts to the yoke already sticking out of the transmission.

no thats a bolt on yoke. because it has the bolts on it. the slip in yoke just has the ujoint that holds the yoke to the driveshaft. and that yoke slids into the transmission. here is a slip joint shaft.

so how does the slip work? when i looked at the pic i did not see any teeth for the yoke to catch in the tranny. how does the tranny turn the driveshaft when its slick?

The slick area is the seal srface the slip yoke is splined on the inside. If you look raelly close at the bottom of the pic you can see a slight sign of the splines in the yoke.

Always liked the "slip-yoke" much better.

You can loosen 4 nuts on the rear u-bolts and drop the drive shaft a lot quicker.

Do certain transmissions use certain yoke types (bolt vs slip?) For example, do all NP435's use the bolt on kind? Do all C6's use a slip kind? What about the 3.03 and the T18?

no all long bed orginally came out with a bolt on yoke and a two piece driveshaft. the short beds used a slip in youke and a single driveshaft. the dentsides started using a single driveshaft in the longbeds. but i dont know what year they started. i dont think it was 73.

i would think that if the u joint does'nt wear out that two piece drive shafts would be stronger.

Short beds use bolt-on yoke. If it's got a slip yoke, someone swapped out the trans.
