Need transmission advice, 4 speed
My first offical post, I have a 69 with a T18.
390 is coming out, Cummins is going in. I finally won a Ford transmission adapter, flywheel, etc on ebay from a bread truck. I like the low gear of the T18, but want OD. What year do I search for the 3speed plus OD that looks like the T18. Does it have the same bellhousing flange? Or am I not remembering right. I googled the SROD, but I think that is the car version and is like a toploader? is T150 right. I can find alot for the T18 and NP, but little to nothing for the OD, HELP? Any other sugjestions? I plan to leave the Cummins stock. 190 hp bus motor, I think I can get 20 mpg with OD. My dodge 1500 360 gets 12 in the city. couldnt pull it's way out of a wet paper bag. Any help is appriciated.

You'll blow a RUG or SROD to h*ll and gone with a 190HP 12 valve!
Have you considered the small block ZF 5 speed? It's got close to the same ratios as a T-18 plus a killer .75 overdrive and they're fairly tough.
I would definitely leave a 12 valve at stock power levels with a small block adapter. The biggest clutch you can fit is a 12" and it'll slip at the stock 12 valve torque levels.

If you could dig one up, you could try the one of the Clark 5 spds from the 280 series. I know the 280 VO is an overdrive 5th gear. Not sure about the rest of them.
I think, the bolt pattern is the same to the bell housing as a T18.
But i'm not 100% sure.
Good luck,

I went ot the transmission shop page on on eof the repliers, great info.
the Ford M5R2 2wd. How do I get the non modular trannys intergreal bellhousing to bolt up? Is it a bolt up? I hope. Input shaft? lenght?
cltutch lever or hydraulic throwout. any more detailes?

All Ford fullsize transfercases up to 98 are the same, you don't need any adapters. Except the D21, it's different. In 98 Ford went to 24 spline, but the pattern is the same. You can respline any 24 spline shaft for the old 31 spline shaft and bolt up any older t-case too though.
The Ford ZF is a better transmission than the NV4500. The ZF bolts directly to any Ford NP203 or 205 and doesn't need any custom adapter or custom mainshaft like the NV4500.
If you do go NV4500 I have a spare ford-NV4500 adapter plate.
What do you need the doubler for? I mean, I've never had the desire for anything lower than granny and low range with a cummins. The off-idle crawl ratio logic kinda goes out the window when you have more than peak small block torque at idle speed.
Personally, I'd rather have a taller ratio just so I can sorta feel the engine bog before I twist something up.

re: Need transmission advice, 4 speed
hauling square bales of hay here in central texas is a lost art, most round bale, I would like to crawl in the field, It looks cool, too. I can see how making 450 ft lbs out a diesal at down low, start multipling the torque through a few gear boxes, and it is through the roof when it hits the ujoints and axle. I retired from the army ,19K4HK4, almost finished with my bachleors in mechanical engineering technology (machining and production). 80,000 and I still cant spell! I will never buy a new truck again. dont want a payment and to take the loss in value right off the bat. gives the wife something to complain about, no garage space! well I am rambling, it's late, thanks for all the replies, great forum.

I lived in Texas for 6 years and never found anyone that was interested in shifting gears in a truck. You can't find a stickshift diesel late model on a lot anywhere.evensteven13 wrote:hauling square bales of hay here in central texas is a lost art, most round bale, I would like to crawl in the field, It looks cool, too. I agree on loading bales, you need a real low creeper. I have even loaded them alone by just letting the truck creep on it's own.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

I cant decide what I want. I do see the gentlemens poit of going so low I'll snap something easily. Maybe I am making it too complicated. I know I need OD, the T18 is tough and easily to take apart. So maybe just a Gear Vendor OD is all, at $3000? But i could buy a new NV4500 for that! I will just focus on the fitting of the engine this winter.

I put a T-18 behind a 6.9 International with the fuel pump turned up, when the T-19 wore out.
The T-18 had a very low (granny) first that is unsyncronized. So in effect it is a wide ratio 3 speed. The wide ratio between the gears was a pain with the desiel power band while pulling a goose neck.
The T-18 lasted maybe a year before I twisted off the out put shaft.
So, I whent back with a T-19. With a syncronized 1st gear and closer spacing, it was much easier to drive.
With a high geared rear end and a 1 to 1 4th gear it would run pretty fast and got good milage, but a 6.9 runs more rpm than a cummins.
Any way T-19s are easy to find and stronger, and have better gear spacing, and are a bolt in replacement for a T-18. Here is a good link. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t18_t19.htm

Re: re: Need transmission advice, 4 speed
I can barely remember when I was a kid going out in the field I think to feed some cattle. I was pretty freaked out when they let the truck go on it's own without a driver. It just creeped along. I never did spend enough time on the farm though. I'm a city slicker for the most part.willowbilly3 wrote: I agree on loading bales, you need a real low creeper. I started looking up these four speed transmissions and lots of links for rock crawlers kept popping up.
