Post by gottabe71fe »

I have a 68' with a 360 and 3speed tranny, and half the time the shifter locks in the neutrel position although it is still in gear just kinda figured it was something to do with the shift tube or the lingage , because i can get under the hood and put it in gear.....well anybodys input would help thanks

if you can get someone to slowly move the shifter in the cab through gears while you look under hood and underneath you'll likely see where the bind is happening due to slop. I've had many a 3-on-tree where I carried a mop handle in bed of truck to "adjust" on side of road when this happened.

Back when I was a kid and we had a lot of 3 on the tree shifters that was a common problem and often some spped shifting would cause the shifter to kind of dislodge there under the hood. I fixed the problem on my 59 Belair by taking a big pair of channel locks and squeezing the shift arms together a bit so there wasn't room for the center dog to get out. still working fine 28 years later.
Dissassembling a 3 speed (or any) steering column isn't an ametuer job.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

3 speed columns can be a real bear. Pay close attention to how it comes apart and you may need a book on it. In the repair books there is the procedure to align the shifters using a drill bit as a tool
