if you've got front cap off, remove trans w/engine, you won't have any problem with that. or buy the harbor freight trans jack (I did), it's paid for itself.
Years ago, when I had buddies who would or could help, we'd get one of us on each side to lower or install automatics. No matter how strong you are, your leverage is all screwed up under something and just a little leaky trans oil will make something a greasy sliding pig looking to fall. I've even had one come off the trans jack (turbo 350) due to oil and it had the strap on it. trans fluid VERY slippery substance.

re: tranny removal
After talking to Kaptnkaos, I've decided to upgrade on the tranny jack:

He pointed out some things he ran across when he got the other one and I agree this one is a much better deal for the money. Thanks, Kaptn!

re: tranny removal
When I was about 19 I pull a tranny from a 1976 AMC Matador bcuz the
torque converter broke. All I did was throw an old piece of plywood under the car and braced the tranny with a floor jack, it wasn't brain surgery
but it all worked out. Do whatcha gotta do!

re: tranny removal
What about those of us who have a np-205 t-case bolted to the back of their trans? I'm in the process of stripping down a 76 f-150 4x4 for my 4x4 conversion I'm doing to my 68, and I'm just going to pull the cab off and hoist the whole trans/t-case combo from one frame to another. I'm going to strip/scrap the rest of the truck anyway so I don't really care how I get to the trans/t-case (BTW, I'm going to try to get my uncle to get his tractor and hoist the cab and trans/t-case for me )
