1964 Galaxie 289/Cruise-o-Matic in a 67 F100?

Post by 72stepside »

Here's the scenario...

My father has a 64 Galaxie Sedan 289 CID (195 hp) w/ a Cruise-o-Matic Auto Tranny (tranny code 6 on the data plate). My cousin has a 67 F100 that had a 240 w/ 3 speed Manual (the engine is in the back of the truck, exposed to the elements).

The Galaxie is a parts car, but the engine and tranny are in great shape. The body is rotten.

My cousin is wanting to revive the 67 bump to use as a hunting truck (body is shot so that's about all it is good for) and was thinking of having the 240 rebuilt, which would make the engine worth waaaay more than the truck.

Pop suggested to me that we pull the engine and tranny out of the Galaxie and install it in the 67 F100 in exchange for a 71 F100 Sport Custom that my cousin has also (it remains to be seen if this deal has any possibility of happening cause cousin has a bad habit of hording everthing he has, just so it can rot away in his posession and no one elses such as 3 bumps, a 68 Mustang, and a 51 F-1). The 71 has good body side moulding (upper and lower) among other items that I want for my F250.

We figured that since the 289 is the same block as a 302 that it shouldn't be that difficult to swap around. Any ideas on whether the tranny is longer than the Ford 3speed manual, which would mean the drive shaft would need to be shorter? Will it even fit on the inline 6 engine perches?

The 67 F100 won't be used for pulling anything or racing, just cruising around in the woods to locate that monster buck!!!!

Any info is appreciated.

is the shifter in the floor of the galaxie? and the 6 cyl perches are also for use with the fe engines. you should really use the small block perches with a swap like that.

The shift is on the column in the Galaxie. Yeah, I've since read I'll have to use the small block perches.

The small-block will bolt up to the FE/I6 perches, but it'll just sit an inch too high. For a street-driven truck, that has the possibility of putting your driveline in a bind, due to changed angles, so I always strongly encourage folks to use the small-block perches. However, for what you're planning on doing with your beater truck on a budget, and since it won't see the road, you could just bolt them onto the existing perches. If needed, you could rig up some 1" spacers to go under the transmission crossmember to bring it up to match the engine.

And yes, I'm sure you'll have to shorten your driveshaft.
