I did a little research and I am saving for a Truetrac. It seems to be a good compromise between a full Locker and a limited slip. You will get lots of opinions on this one.

Danzig,
When you say the "original" rearend in the truck.
What model truck or rearend?
Detroit locker is the one if you want to burn rubber.
Keep in mind with a positive traction like the locker your gas mileage is gonna be terrible.
Traction locks are cool too.

Stock they came with Trac-locs and Power-locs. Power-locs being the better of the two.
If you want after market it would depend on how thick your wallet is and what exactly you want the rig to do.

How does a limited slip diff effect fuel mileage? Never heard that before.basketcase0302 wrote:Danzig,

Powerlocks are king for street driving, but can be harsh, trac-locs are a small step above an open diff that might get you out of a mudpuddle. Detroit lockers are full-on harsh, both wheels always spin no matter what.
If you drive on the street detroits are very rough. Powerlocks chirp tires a little around corners and are very tough and reliable.

Sounds like a license will be slipp'n away if you do the peeling out on the road a lot. I paid a couple of fines in my life, and court costs and an attorney on another traffic related driving incident. That peeling out stuff can get more costly, with the fines, and then higher insurance costs, than what it cost to buy and install the parts in the truck to do it with.
Too many projects, too little time, but.. lovin' it!

re: Posi trac? Trac loc?
Trac-locs are the very basic of clutched lockers. They have 4 clutch disks per side. They take alot to get them to hook up and usually the clutches wear out sooner then the Power-loc. Power-locs have eight clutch disks per side and doesn't take much to get them to hook up and don't slip. They are way easier to work on and replace the packs. You can get two different types of packs. Smooth surface (norm) or aggresive surface clutches. I wouldn't waste my time with a Trac-loc if I was to get a clutched locker.

The true-trac clutch LS is a step above the trac-lok. Nothing to write home about.
Detroits and powerlocks are tough. Take them apart and compare them to anything else made. There's nothing that comes close.
Most clutch type limited slips look like an open diff with clutches and steels added outside the spiders. The powerlock has the added benefit of having two crosspins mounting 4 gears and a completely closed carrier design that you can't break.

re: Posi trac? Trac loc?
That clears it up. wasn't sure which one I had but by Averages description it's clearly the Powerlock. Anyone got pics of Trac-locs, Powerlocs and True-tracks to compare???

re: Posi trac? Trac loc?
You boys are scaring me a little. The thread looks to be out of gas so hope it's okay to hijack it. I have a trac-loc that I recently came across and was going to put it my 68 (390) with some low (.411) gears to have a toy. The engine is mild, 350 hp/ 400 lb torque but enough of to perform the one wheel peel. Since mileage sucks anyway thought I'd make it a stop light king and run it at the local track for kicks occasionally. Should I find something else?

re: Posi trac? Trac loc?
Just to make sure the 1/2 ton guys arent mislead.
The Powerlock versus Trac-loc is a Dana thing
Ford used Equalock and Traction Lock clutches in 9 inch rears and the Traction lock was the better one
The pic shows 3 Dana 60 carriers, from the left, a Powerlock, a Trac Lock and an open diff. The Powerlock is indeed more heavy duty and you see a stronger clutch and spider gear design

Re: re: Posi trac? Trac loc?
If you ain't looking to spend any cash on it just insert some ball bearings between the teeth on the spiders and weld the crap out of it. Just don't weld on the carrier itself.tod-hog wrote:You boys are scaring me a little. The thread looks to be out of gas so hope it's okay to hijack it. Track-locs suck and won't last under harsh conditions.

Get an ARB... Locked when you want, open when you want... and since you turn it on, it doesn't wear out the way clutch based lockers do.
