67 f100 manual tranny that has issues

Post by nadams »

I am going to look at and most likely buy a 67 f100 with a 352 (according to owner) and a manual tranny. The truck will start and run but once the tranny warms up it will not move any more. He says that the tranny has a leak but unless there is no fluid I don't think that is the issue.

Your descrpition is impossible.

Manual transmissions cannot slip like an auto.

It's either a clutch issue or a problem getting the tranny into gear (synchros).

That said, you can always get an old 435 or T-18 into gear unless there is a broken shift fork/hub.

If the transmission is run out of oil it will basically melt down. In a 435 the rear mainshaft bearing will be the first to go, followed by the rest of the bearings. If the howling, shaking and churning noises coming from the tranny weren't enough for you to stop driving it eventually the mainshaft gears will sieze to the mainshft locking up the tranny.

No I am a total moron. It is an auto tranny. While typing I was thinking if I should replace with a manual or find another auto. I guess that is why I should proof read before I post.

thats ok i do that myself all the time. i think thats why kieth has the site redirect you back to your post after its posted so it can be checked over a third time before it gets submittied.

anyway. if the trans works bbwhen cold but not when hot then it needs rebuilt . because the old seal in it arent sealing when it warms up. only when its cold will they seal up. a trans fluid leak could make a differecne. it is low on fluid. but low fluid would make it not move ever. or be real hard to start moving to begin with. the third option is that the clutches are slipping inside of the drums. from low fluid level over the years. smell the fluid to see if the fluid smells burnt. if it does then the clutches are burned up and need replaced.

That makes more sense now! I do the same mistakes now and then, no worries.

Fordmans right on the money. Slipping in relation to emperature is a good indication the seals are hard and leaking. To replace all the drum seals and sealing rings in an auto you're going to get as far into an automatic as you can go, might as well replace the frictions while you're in there.

Sharkdance just did an excellent writeup on rebuilding his C-6. I'd look over it, might inspire you to tackle the job yourself.

Switching to a manual is also a an option. It's not hard, but there are a lot more parts involved than just the transmissions.

Didn't the '67 use the FMX?

I went and looked at the truck tonight and it does have an FMX according to the seller. Is this going to be harder to rebuild. I was all stoked about rebuilding a C6 since the rebuild kit was $80.
