68 truck /79 splidles / dream beams, take me to school

Post by fitzwell »

Ok...68 short bed truck. Have the complete front susp setup(spindles/ibeams/radius arms) off a 79. To do the dream beam thing i get the kit for a 79, correct? If so does it make a difference on which radius arms i use, the ones off the 68 or the ones from the 79.

On another note, what do y'all use for radius arm bushings & axle pivot bushings...rubber/ urethane...unobtanium??? and why do use what you use..longevity, ride etc. This is gonna be a driver, not a once a month garage queen

Advice/ comments/ criticism /smart ass remarks are all welcomed here
:D

Yes, do get the 79 Dream Beams as that is what your parts are coming from.
On the radius arms I thought I seen something about the spring mount being different was the only thing so if you used the new arm use the new springs... I'm not finding the info on that right at the moment...
Here is some info on the brake swap http://www.fordification.com/discbrakes01.htm you will need the pitman arm also...
more info... http://www.fordification.com/Ibeams&spindles.htm

On the bushings I have not done them yet so hopefully someone else will let you know but the urethane ones will be more ridged for better handling with the trade off of more road noise. will usually hold up longer but the stock stuff holds up pretty good on it's own... :2cents:
Shayne
I'm not "Brand Loyal" Ford-Chevy-Dodge-Toyota I have them all, one even cross mixed...
If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...

rebuilt the front end on my 68, the stock radius arm bushings were fine, but I went ahead and put in new, just since I had it apart. The rubber body mounts on my '55 Chevy are fine too. Stock rubber can last quite awhile. So, I went back w/rubber on my radius arms, but I'm no canyon carver.
The shock mount bracket is somewhat different on 79 radius arms, mounts kinda different to the radius arm. I think that's probably only difference. Here is where I forget. If you use all 79 front end, you "might" have to consider pitman arm change from out of steering box to draglink (or whatever that part is called)??? Unsure on that part.
