I may be picking up a drivetrain to swap into my bump on Monday. It is an EFI 4.9l and 2wd ZF trans out of an 89 F-250. I haven't personally seen the engine or trans yet, but in the pictures, it looks like the trans just has a yoke on the back of the transmission for a 2 pc driveshaft assembly (no slip yoke).
I know that most of the 1/2 ton stuff came with the Mazda 5 speed. I need a slip yoke style tailshaft, did the ZF trannies ever come with one? I have a one-piece driveline in my SWB bump, so I need the slip yoke.
If not, I guess I'll have to trade the ZF for an M5R2 Mazda trans, right?

The ZF's did not come with a slip yoke that I've seen.
I would keep the ZF if you can. All you need to do is ditch your slip yoke and get a 4x4 style driveline with the slip built in. Driveline shop should be able to build you one complete for under $200. Might find a used one just the right length too.

if you dont want it, I could use that ZF to repair my F-350! I have a truck headed this way from Vegas in February....

I hadn't thought of the slip style driveshaft. I'll look into it.
Does anybody know if a ZF will even fit in a bump? In the pictures, it looks HUGE! Maybe I'm just used to seeing my tiny 3 speed manual hanging under there, but that ZF sure looks massive.

I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. $500 for the engine, tranny, wiring harness, computer, accessories, etc. Pretty much comes with everything that was in the engine bay. Truck had 80K on it.
I know I can delete the EGR system, and the air injection system/smog pump, but do I need to have the computer reworked to take this stuff out??
I'd like to take off anything smog related, and reduce the wiring harness to just the basics if possible.

To remove EGR you have to fake the computer out to believe the egr valve is broken and stuck closed. Takes a few resistors wired in. Check fordfuelinjection.com.
You can eliminate EGR, air injection, cats and the knock sensor without the computer caring.
If you split the late model alternator open you can install the forward part of it's housing on your trucks existing alternator and with the serpentine pulley it'll bolt right up and look factory.
I use the walker EFI downpipe for exhaust in these older trucks. I'll dig up the part number if you need it.
When I remove the air injection tubes I soak the compression nuts that go in the head for a couple days with penetrating oil. Then I cut the tubes off and use a socket with an impact to get them out. I fill the compression fittings with weld and screw them back in.
The 89 will have very simple wiring. I holesaw a hole through the firewall right next to where I put the clutch master for the harness to pass through. I mount the computer in the bracket that holds the stock radio speaker (nobody uses the stock speaker anyway).
