Drudging up an old post here because I'm looking at doing this again, and wanted to revisit this.

To start with, I'm looking at buying the Pertronix Ignitor II and flamethrower II coil kit here:
http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Item ... 0000334460

Given those are the only things I intend to replace (unless I decide to replace the plug wires), what is the deal with the "ballast wire"? Is that something that exists in my '67?? What else utilizes this wire? Where does it run from? Where does it run to?

I thought this was a pretty simple plug-n-play kind of deal, but this stuff about the ballast is confusing me. I'm not planning to wire in a tach, and I don't understand where the Crane XRi came into play in the original post. Isn't it basically the same as the Pertronix??

When hooking up my pertronix, (not pertronix2) i used my old coil and hook up the igniter to the coil red to + black to - with the resister wire still in place, resister wire has 10 volts on it, that was 6 years ago and i have had no problems.
I think the pertronix 2 takes a full 12 volts and there coil (flamethrower 2) is recomended. :2cents:

Hey Keith... that thread is THIS thread... :D

I've read it, and I still don't quite understand... can I just hook up the Pertronix II and Flamethrower II coil on my '67 and go, or do I need to do something with the "ballast wire"? And if so, what else is that wire used for?

 Whoops, so it is! Man, see what happens when you jump into the middle of an old thread?

The ballast wire is more-commonly called the resistor wire on our trucks. It's a long pink wire which extends from the ignition switch to the coil. And no, the Pertronix II needs a full 12V, so you won't use the resistor wire, if I'm understanding this correctly.

haha! Good stuff... lol

So if I am understanding correctly, then, when I hook up the Pertronix II and FTII coil, I just leave the pink resistor wire unhooked.

Can anyone confirm or deny? :)

SuperMike, Your new set up requires a full 12 volts, Remove the resistor from the pink wire and then it will have a full 12 volts. The resistor is located under the dash in the center of the truck on the pink wire and is difficult to find and remove. Keep us posted

Thanks, Charles! Can you or anyone provide a picture of this resistor? I'm a visual learner... lol!

There's been a lot of electrical work on this truck to add a CB, radio, etc... I wouldn't be surprised if it's already been removed.

Actually, the pink wire itself is the resistor. You have to remove it and replace it with a non-resistor wire. There is not a doohickey inline on the wire.

Replace it with a non-resistor wire?

Ok, maybe I'm getting in over my head here... what I'm trying to gather now is what this wire does? It goes from where to where? I unhook it where? I replace it with what kind of wire (12g?) and hook what up to it?

I thought this was going to be pretty simple, but this dealio with the resistor wire is causing me to 2nd guess. Maybe I should just go with the original Ignitor and Flamethrower coil?

EDIT: I understand from the previous responses that the ballast resistor is the long pink wire extending from the ignition switch to the coil. Keith noted "you won't use the resistor wire, if I'm understanding this correctly." So does this just mean I can unhook it from the ignition switch?

The pink wire is a resistor wire! I changed mine over from the old points set-up in my '69 with a 390. You just cut the pink wire close to the ignition switch and close to the connector where it branches off and goes out to the coil. Splice in a piece of regular wire about the same gauge and you're done. Turn on the ignition switch-you should have 12 volts at the coil! It's that easy. I haven't messed with my ignition since!

P.S. Definitely go with the Pertonix II and Flamethrower II coil-they are made to work with each other, and the Pertronix II is a much more reliable set-up!!!!!!
