If you bolted dual wheels to a single wheel axle the inner tires would rub the box inner fenders, or at least be way too close to be useable. Also duallys are usually hub centered where singles are stud centered and the studs on our SRW are'nt even long enough to go through two wheels. So I would say if you want a dually with discs find a '99 + F350 DRW axle.
Actually, I think that DRW axles are narrower than SRW's. On SRW's, the rear tires track directly behind the front tires, whereas on the DRW axles, the inner tire tracks inside the front tire track, and the outer tire tracks outside the front tire track :2cents:
I think you will find many DRW trucks also have a wider front track, but if not and the inner is just inside the front and the outer is just outside the front that would make the rear axle the same width for both SRW and DRW. But I do know when I've experimented with DRW on a SRW truck the tires are very close to the inner fender and only stick outside the outer fender about 1.5". I'm not saying all are like that but every Ford and Dodge I've owned or measured is.

You do have a point there, but I still think that it is slightly narrower, not from hub face to hub face, but from the back of the back of each brake drum, I think that each tube is about 1.5" to 2" narrower :2cents:

1971 D-70 dually rear axle measurements:

From centerline of leaf to leaf=40.5 inches.

From brake backing plat to brake backing plate=51.5

Hope this helps.

Jeff

edited to include the measurements.

Saw that. But it is an F350 not F250. The VIN starts F35. Nice truck!

Steve,

Good eye man.
I saw the listed F-250 and assumed he had changed the axle.

You could just drill out for the longer studs as long as the inner tire doesn't contact the spring. I think it's been done. Something about a dually with the single wheel style rims up front doesn't set well with me.
And also I have never had a dually that the front tire tracked with the inside dual, it generally runs in the gap between the duals. I have heard that statement many times but haven't owned a truck that proved. But then I have only owned 4 F-350 duallys and none newer than a 72
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

I've always seen the front track at the centerline of the rears too.

How about a dually rear with a (mostly) complete dentside truck for $700? Even all the tires are good. It's in the for sale section, but the catch is that it's close to Steven's Pass (west side)

You mean this?

That would be what you need. You could even use the bigger rear springs. As I understand it, the rear axle and the front hub/discs/calipers should be a direct bolt in. If the tires and wheels are good, there's an easy $700 worth of stuff there.

The 400 motor was in good shape when I pulled it from the '79 Lincoln Towncar to put in there last summer (didn't get a chance to finish hooking it up) Still have the 460 engine stands (been kind of busy)

I understand being busy. Too bad you can't keep it. Maybe another time you'll be able to stay with something.
