c6 repair or replace?

i am unsure what a rebuilt one runs now days. but if you were to rebuild your it could need hard parts. since it is stuck. maybe just one of the bands is stuck to a drum who knows until it is opened up. what color was the fluid and how did it smell? is it nice and red or is it brownish. does it smell burnt? or like plastic? how greasy is the outside of it? does it look like its ever been out of the truck?

* outside pretty greasy (it's sat for ~18 yrears)
* it's definitely not been out of the truck. The stick that they use to clog the dipstick tube during manufacturing was still in the pan.

What are the chances that if someone tears apart the one I have (it's only been run for 64k miles) that if this fix was simple (one band or something obvious) that they wouldn't charge me a "full up transmission rebuild" estimate?

If it's sat for 18 years have it rebuilt. Autos have many internal seals that deteriorate over time.

yes if you take it apart have it rebuilt. as long as it doesnt need drums or anything you cant find. i did see a few eeks ago on ebay a guy was selling a whole transmission in pieces. he had the drums and valve body case everything all in different auctions. so you could get lucky and find drums on ebay if you need them. or a junkyard might have a transmission for parts. even i have a extra transmission that runs out here. shipping might not be real nice to you though. it would depend on what it weighed.

Thanks guys. I'll move forward with having the one I've got rebuilt. There are surprisingly a bit of these trucks in my area so I think I'll be okay for parts. Also, I'm not really on a tight timeframe (good thing!)

Not to hijack, but....
Mine has sat for 15 yrs now... only had 49k on it when parked. Was gonna replace the outer seals. Doesn't have water in it at least.
Do y'all think it should go for rebuilt regardless, or see what it does 1st?

i would see if it drives first. and then put it on the list for rebuild later. money isnt free when your rebuilding a truck.

when you say it feels like it is simply stuck in park, have you gotten under the truck (on flat spot, non-running w/emergency brake on) and manually moved linkage down into gear and bypassed your neutral safety switch at the base of your steering column (if it has one) to see if it'd crank and pull in any gear? Have you verified your column shift arm (if that's what it is) is still firmly bolted to the linkage? If not, you could very well be stuck in park and moving the shifter from park to drive and it moves, but isn't moving the arm on the transmission under the truck to put it into gear.
If the neutral safety switch is bypassed, you can crank and in any gear the truck will begin pulling, reverse, drive, whatever. First, get a buddy to pull it down from park to drive with it not running and on flat spot while you look at the linkage on side of transmission and be sure it's moving down to ground and to engage gears. Park it all way up, 1st all way down toward ground as far as it'll go.

Yup. Tried that. Bypassed the switch, made sure the linkage was hooked to the transmission & working properly (it is). But thanks for the 411!
