67 master cylinder help needed

Post by 4th effie n counting »

Ok so i get my truck running, but on her maiden voyage whoosh no brakes have i! I go to Advance this morning and order master cylinder, but i believe it is not right one.
question 1 : on 4 drum setup are both halves equally divided on master? the one that was ordered had rear section was bigger than front. I think on disc/drum setup the larger is for the discs.
question 2 : does anyone have pic of 67 master and pushrod? or can link me to comparison of 67 and 68-72.
the catalog at Advance doesn't even list 67 goes from like early 50s to 66, then 68, 69-72.(it was paper catalog for bendix brake parts)
oh yeah the one they ordered didn't have a pushrod, but there was one that had rod included but i think it was listed as a 68 part.
thanks for helping..

the rod is removeable from your old master. i think the drum drum masters are equal in size.

Like Fordman says, you can pull the rod out of your old master cylinder, it takes some twisting and pulling, but it will come. Then just shove it in to the new one.

Good luck!

If your master cylinder has the dual matching reserviors and they tried to give you the offset version you need to check with some other parts stores.

Autozone told me there was only one distributor rotor for my mom's 1989 5.0 EFI 5.0 Clubwagon Van. They then tried to tell me that someone must have replaced the distributor. Blooomin' 1d1ot5!! (to keep from saying it outright).

I went to AdvanceDiscount and got the one I needed. There are two different ones that could come in that year / engine van. I knew this.

The Bozo behind the counter that probably just left unemployment for a job at Autozone didn't know any better, except that if the computer says there is only one it must be right, uh-h-h-h, er-r-r.

it would appear that mine takes offset... I have looked on LMC, NAPA, and NPD NPD doesn't show a photo tho so i'm not sure if theirs is offset but it seemed like they noted when it was offset or equal. what a headache

Is or was your master cylinder empty in one or more reservior when you brought it home and when you went to take it out?

I have bought several 60s Mustangs and Cougars that the owners said needed brakes. I'm sure they need brake repairs, but, I added fluid to the dry reserviors, pumped the pedal several times and a couple pumped right up and held and worked, and a couple others I let sit about an hour, pumped them again and they held. You may have a different problem causing the reservior(s) to go dry and the master cylinder could be good.

My '72 with 4 drums has a larger resivoir for the fronts, I was told it's because the fronts do 60 to 90% of the braking and need the extra fluid to help keep it cool.

that is correct. the front brakes do most of the stopping.

my master is so rusty, lid too, that i don't think its sealing well. there is rust in bottom of the forward half. Advance part is only like 17 bux I will know this evening if it will work :D
I was just trying to see if anyone had this trouble in regard to the 67 year, anyone know of any other 67 only issues?

Im sorry, I should have given a little more info. I have drums all the way around. I added the power booster, but the master cylinder in the picture is the same one that has alway been on it, even when it was manual.

seattle67, is adding booster a pain or no? i wouldn't mind power drums til i can swing a disc conversion, if it improves braking that is.

adding a power booster is easy. all you need is the 67 booster and the booster brackets. also you will need a intake vacuum source

ok this link is to pic of the current rusty cylinder...note that it is equal. However i know the PO had changed it prior to parking it. so that is why im unsure of its correctness.
