NPT435 Q&A

Post by Sabbaticus »

I have 2 questions about my tranny, and hopefully this thread will help others ask their questions as well.

1: when I shift into 3rd, I must go past the slot and pull back towards me as I go into gear or it grinds. What causes that and what will it take to fix it.

2: Where is the sensor, lead, wire, or switch located on the tranny so I can hook up the back up lights.

Thanks in advance for your help, suggestions, and advice.

Your top shift plate is worn and allowing the shifter to try and grap 1st when your going into third.

I've never seen this with 435's, but it's a very common problem with early T-18's.

Sure you don't have a T-18? Just the way the shift rails are laid out in an early T-18 makes them prone to this, your best bet is to get used to it if you have a T-18.

Often the shift lever itself wears and it lets the lever crooss over before its all the way out of the prior gear

I have welded up and ground many, its pretty easy fix, weld it, grind it round again, and stick it back in the hole LOL

How do I tell the difference between a T-18 and a NPT 435? It is a 4 speed. 1st is 00 you normally shift 2-4 unless pulling something heavy.

Cough cough. Well, in the future I guess I will need to post in a T-18 thread!

Ok, is the reverse light connection going to be in the same place mentioned before?

Yeah, It just stinks when you are looking for speed. I hope to fund some of the restoration by winning burnout competitions because this baby boils! But it sucks on the occasion that I can't shift smoothly. It will boil the tires through all 4 gears. I actually only miss 3rd when I am speed shifting.

Yep, I am pretty good at it, I miss it about 20% of the time though.

Shifting like that is the reason why it does what it does.

Keep driving like that and you'll learn what it feels like to shift without synchros. Might even get lucky and snap a shift fork.
