Transmission question...3 speed Manual

Post by tronman »

Well this morning I saw something I've never seen before...a 3 speed manual eat itself! Driving along at 65mph(yes in 3rd...) I felt a slight bog....then the dreaded squeal of death and she locked up! Manage to smack the shifter a time or two and get it to nuetral and coasted to the side of the road. A little checking and I found 1st gear, let out clutch as in normal take off, instand engine stall...will not move. 2nd and 3rd the same as well as reverse. Stuck it back in Nuetral and was deciding whether to call someone to drag me home or walk back to the house and I let out on the clutch...she moves! IN NUETRAL!!! Well...I figured what the heck, the tranny is definitely dead and managed to drive it back to the house in nueutral at about 10mph(with lots of loud noises...).

Now for my question...called around today to try and find a tranny...I want to go back with a 3 speed as I have a very nice shifter on the one in it currently, no one seems to either want to mess with it or syas they can't get anything that old...heck I thought any 3 speed from a ford truck from mid 60's to late 80's would swap in with no hassle? Am I wrong there guys?

This evening I was at the local autozone and told one of the guys there what had happened, he took a few minutes to look it up and came back telling me he could get a reman tranny for $566 with about a week delivery time. The problem is...they list the 3 speed manual in a 67F100 as being a Saginaw...that just doesn't sound right to me...I know GM used saginaws but I didn't think Ford did at that time anyway...

Ok fella's enlighten me...is AutoZone full of crap? Or did they just manage to redeem themselves?

No, IIRC Borg Warner built all Ford's manual transmissions. I don't think a Saginaw was ever installed in a Ford truck.

I've got a 3.03 3-spd on the shop floor from a '72 F100 parts truck with a 302. The truck was being driven up to the point of being parted out. Let me know if you'd be interested.

Ok have new tranny sitting on the tailgate of the truck ready for install!

I pulled the old tranny the other day and figured out what happened, for some reason second gear decided to weld itself to the mainshaft...while I was driving along in third, two gears engaged simultaneous is not recommended! Anyway, the reason I have a forward gear in nuetral and in no other position is any gear you engage you always have second still being driven from the countershaft, but in nuetral...just have second always engaged. Of course second was about gone...for some odd reason almost all the teeth are gone from both the main gear and the drive gear for second...

Anyway, hopefully if weather permits will have the new tranny in tomorrow and be back on the road!

Sorry, no pics. battery was dead in the camera when I tore it down and I never thought to take any pictures before I scapped it.

I got the new(salvaged) tranny in this afternoon! Ended up having to play with my shift linkage quite a bit, but ended up with a nice short throw between 1st ,2nd, and 3rd! I like that!

Amazing the difference running down the road now, the old transmission must have been on it's last legs when I bought the truck, because it's a night and day difference, even betting my gas mileage will increase dramatically now too! Can tell there's a lot less resistance in the drivetrain. Now...to enjoy the truck for awhile...at least until the next issue arises!
