Clark 250/251 5 speed.

Post by willowbilly3 »

In 1960 you could get on of these 5 speeds in an F-350, not sure of other years. Anybody ever seen one? Probably used in 1 1/2 ton trucks too. The 251 is overdrive.

I have a mystery clark non-OD non-synchro 5 speed from a late 50's Ford on the shop floor. If it's a 250 or 251, then yes, I have seen one.

Oh please, oh please, oh please see if this will really work!!

I am right at the point of trying to come up with an overdrive tranny option and if this is truly a 5 speed overdrive that will bolt up to the FE this would solve my problem, provided you can still find these......

The 250 is DD, 251 is OD. I have some more info here on Clark transmissions.

I'm still trying to find an oldschool 5 speed set up for FE/FT.

Find a Clark 280VO and a FT bellhousing. Then either use a FT flywheel with the balance weight cut off and use a 12" clutch or get a FE clutch made with a 1-3/8" 10 spline hub. Instant FE 5-speed with OD.
I can build that...

Isn't my bigshaft toploader a 1 3/8 10 spline? If so then a 1968 428 Cobrajet disc should work.

Good luck ever finding a 250/251. I looked forever back whan I was driving the 57 and only found the one and it wasn't for sale. Of course I wasn't savvy about what all school buses ect. might have had one.

Would these 250/251's be in F-800's? My buddy has two of 'em, a '62 with a lincoln motor & a '64 with a FT.

I think you would want a little heavier unit in an F-800, like a 280 series.
