Transmission "noises"

I have a rebuilt c6 behind a 390 that seems to be, for lack of a better word, noisy. I checked the fluid level and it is fine, along with the color. The truck also shifts fine as well. The problem is that there is a pronounced whining noise when in park or neutral. The noise is less when in drive, but still there.

I'll probably have to pull the pan and replace it along with the tailshaft seal soon anyway so I figured I'd try and fix that noise too.

The last idiot who had the truck routed the headers over the trans bolts so it is a real job when trying to remove the pan... can barely get a wrench in there grr.

i am going to guess and see if anyone else might know for sure. but three things come to mind. the torque converter may be making that whine you hear. i have also heard of being able to put regular gm type clutch disc packs in the ford transmissions. so maybe that has happened and someone put type f back in instead of dextron. im am going to say the converter as a likely suspect though.

I would say it sounds like a pump issue since it's mostly in park/neutral. The converter wouldn't be under load in these conditions and free spinning. Or, it could be the valve body itself. Dodge transmissions from 1994-2001, are notorious for reverse gear groaning/whining due to valve body issues. While a completely different make, they do have interesting trouble spots that "just make noise". The C6 is an interesting trans in itself. While able to handle awesome torque, it has had issues as far back as the early 70's for strange noises and slippage going into gear, especially when the weather starts to get really cold. While I'm far from a trans expert, I would say this: If the fluid and filter is good and it drives and shifts well, learn to live with it. Otherwise, you're looking at a tear down to find the problem, which may cost you as much as a complete rebuild.

My C6, which is well worn, has run behind a 390 since 1995. While it does have a mild whine in park/neutral, and the fact that when the temp gets cold, around 0*, it will slip a little going into gear, has had no other problems. It's the best trans I've ever seen and plan on running it until it dies completely. Then I'll rebuild.

I agree on the pump.
They make that very distinctive "whining", (kinda like my ex-wife)!
