wheels, disks and track width

Post by Steve302 »

Hello,
im still not sure on staying 2wd or going to a 4wd, but i had a few questions..................
If i go to disk brakes on my 1/2 ton 2wd, will the drum steel wheels fit?

Am i going crazy? it looks like the rear axle is 3 inches narrower than it should be, bacically the front tires stick out more than the rear, is this normal?
Thanks, Steve

I do believe your steel wheels will still fit, someone let me know if I am wrong there. And the rear axle on the Bumps being narrower then the front is completly normal.

Unless Ford is different than GM, drum steel rims are different than disc steel rims on the backside. You can bolt up, but truck won't roll. If I recall correctly, one wheel has 3 raised humps toward middle and that is difference, but it's been several years and I'm talking GM.

Ok, I recalled the GM deal. On GM steel wheels meant for drum they are flat on the inside to sit flush against drum. On GM steel wheels meant for discs they have 3 large humps on the inside that space wheel out a tad so the steel wheel clears the caliper. So, on GMs you can bolt them up fine, but car won't roll as the caliper will be froze against the inner rim.
On Fords, I recall from doing my disc conversion, the calipers mount very differently and are made totally different, so I guess you don't have this problem with ford. Didn't mean to confuse, took me awhile to think of this, wanted to clarify.
