C-6 / Cruise-o-matic tranny Q's.

Post by kawasakifreak77 »

I got a couple of C-6's for a c-note & one of them I'm rather curious about. It has a removable aluminum bell-housing that looks like a FE style pattern & the body of it is cast iron. The other thing is the tail-shaft/U-joint at the back is wierd. Like truck C-6's have the bolt on yoke with a short tail-shaft & car's have a slip in joint & long tail-shaft. This one is short like a truck tranny & has a blot-on flange, then the yoke bolts to the flange like what you see on newer cars. How do I identify whether this is a C-6 or a cruise-o-matic over-drive tranny? Also, I heard a funny wive's tale when I was a kid. This old man told me that some auto's (including C-6's) could be push started because the pump was driven from the driveshaft. In thoery I guess this means that if the vehicle is moving making the driveshaft spin, making the pump turn & pressurizing the clutches allowing it to turn over the motor like a manual. Not sure if this is true, just curious if anyone out there knows whether it is or not. Thanks in advance for any help with either of these questions.

c6 doesnt have a removable bellhousing. i think it was only c4 and fmx that had the removable bellhousings. as far as the push starting thing no. only if the trans was a older one from the 50's did that. the rear pump in these transmissions wont push enough to do what needs to be done to start the engine. and the driveshaft wont turn the front pump.

The iron-cased trans is a Cruise-O-Matic (FMX).
You will not push start a COM or a C6.
The C6 is the better of the two transmissions.
The C6 will handle more horsepower and is easier and less expensive to get parts for.

So the FMX & COM are the same thing? I thought the FMX was a smaller tranny & the COM was an over-drive version of the C-6. Anyways, since this tranny has a cast iron body, you're sure it's an OD? I want to make sure because I want to put an OD behind my next FE. Thanks for the info guys.

An FMX is not an overdrive.

So niether of these are OD's? I always heard as a kid that there was an OD version of the C-6. I was hoping one of these was exactly that.

An E40D is basically an overdrive C-6...

You may also have an MX. The FMX didn't come out until 69.I don't know the differences between them but they do look similar and both have removable bells.

None of the Ford OD trannys will bolt to an FE but I do remember seeing reference to an adapter to bolt an E4OD to one. :)
