C-6 side seal
ok, my C-6 leaks out the hole on the driver side where the shifter linkage on the transmission comes out. It's a small block bellhousing c6 automatic. Seems I read the trans pan/valve body has to be dropped to replace this (leaky pretty good), anybody replaced theirs, how hard is this?

Yes the valve body has to come down in order to slide the manual linkage out from the inside.
IIRC there is also an O-Ring on the kickdown linkages shaft...

Banjo, you have to pull the pan and valve body to get the linkage out.I'd suggest doing this on concrete or asphalt.I'd also suggest laying the valve body bolts out in order because they are different lengths.

ok, I'm following and thank you for input, when I pull valve body, will little bb's and springs and weird stuff pop out and go everywhere?

Nope, no flying bb's or springs.I would suggest you drop the valve body straight down and not turn it over. There are check balls ( bb's) in a C6 and up ending the valve body may send them flying.
2 things that automatic trannys don't like, they are dirt and silicone sealer.

No, You don't need to separate the upper and lower valve body halves, only remove the entire VB itself...Banjo wrote:ok, I'm following and thank you for input, when I pull valve body, will little bb's and springs and weird stuff pop out and go everywhere?
The attaching bolts should be the only ones with 3/8 heads...
If you get stuck post a clear picture and I can point the correct ones out...

re: C-6 side seal
Found many of my problems in one shot just a few minutes ago! This leak was NOT from where shift rod comes out of automatic as it appeared, was a small little bolt kinda thing right near where the kickdown runs to automatic. I guess it had backed off somehow? Anyhow, that explained not only the leaking fluid but the weird shifting problems I'd attributed to homemade trans linkage on side of tranny. I was having to let off gas to allow truck to go from 2nd to 3rd and didn't even have 1st gear.
Anyhow, once I finally found this leak, tightened this little bolt with a small open end wrench pretty tight, shifts are great, all 3 forward gears, and keeping an eye out for fluid leaks, but looks good so far. Keep your fingers crossed for me. thanks to all for your suggestions, banjo.

re: C-6 side seal
bobby must have been pressure port plug, because I had installed a different little slider mount (that goes between column shift and trans linkage) and took for short ride and noticed same thing, missing 1 gear and wouldn't shift out of 2nd unless I let completely off throttle. Came right back home and dove under and fresh trans fluid dripping off alot of areas under there, like spraying. I started feeling around and noticed this little "bolt" I'll call it that had a 4 sided square head screwed into side of C-6 near the kickdown linkage tab. Tightened it down real good with open end wrench and wiped everything down real good (to check for re-leak) and drove it and came right home and parked and dove under it again and no trans fluid sprays/leaks, and trans shifted just fine, all 3 gears and no slippage as it had before. How that little "plug" thing backed off is odd, but that must've been the problem.
I sure hope that resolves it. Banjo.

Banjo, I just went and looked at a couple of C6's I have in my shed. That square headed plug is actually a band adjusting bolt. How it came loose I have no idea but it would account for the hard shifting problem. There is a pressure port about 2" forward of the kickdown linkage. It has a 7/16's hex head plug.
