Why not get an AOD? Try reviewing the post on the inline 6 forum http://www.fordsix.com/. Lots of info there. :2cents:

C4 certainly was available in F100s for a number of years. My 65 shop manual has it.

Problem with a C6 behind a 240 or 300 is that it can rob you of a boat load of power. The C4 loses much less power. What you do NOT want is an old C4. Look for a 70 or newer unit. And a better built C4 can indeed be made to handle much more HP than a 300 will dish out. There are guys with 460's using C4 trannies.

That being said, the death of a tranny is not necesaarily sheer HP -- its heat. If you are going to tow with a C4 at all, you would be wise to consider a tranny oil trep guage and an accessory cooler in front of the radiatior. Then again, if you are going to tow much with a 300, a 4speed manual is a better bet anyhow. Or some later 5 speed variation.

Swapping to an automatic transmission can be a process. Its not something you just do for grins. Even if you take the easy route and put in a floor shifter, you still have issues with cooling, kickdown, cross memeber location, yoke differences, driveshaft differences.

And you'll be left with a non functional column shifter from the 3 speed and a non-functional clutch.

Or you can go hunting and get brake pedal assembly from a truck with an automatic tranny and a column with automatic shift. Thats all fine, but if you have ripped all that stuff up, you probably will want to look at power steering, which you probably don't have if you have a 3 speed.

In other words. Go slow and think hard before you tear stuff apart.

Good luck....
65 f-100 SWB, 240 I6, T-18, now swapped to C4 with difficulty. Yeah, I know. Its a 67-72 site. But my frame and entire drive train are just like yours!!!!

Beware if you choose a C-6 that Ford has two different size transmission tunnels, based on transmission application. You can fit a C-6 in the smaller floor hump tunnel, but it will press against the floorpan very hard and will transmit vibrations/heat through the floopan, so check your tunnel heigth if you going C-6. A C-4 can be built to handle any power you want.

ok. first off. ill tell my opinion. Going to a auto is a waste of time and money. they steal power, limit your gearing choices, and just dont belong in a truck IMO. WHY would you switch to an auto? they steal power and with the 3 on the tree, you can still have origional parts. ok, now that thats out of the way, yes a c4 will bolt up. and so will a c6, however the c6 steals about 40 hp where as a c4 only steals about 25. If you can get a sturdy c4, it will hold up just as well as a c6, without giving up power. also, you will have to get a taller tranny hump if you go with a c6.
