Won't go into park

Post by dablack00 »

Drove the truck all day. Everything worked great. Got home and the truck wouldn't go into park. So I kill it in drive and figure there is something wrong w/ the rod on the trans lever. I get under there to unhook it and readjust it. I put the transmission in park (at the trans lever), then I go to put the column in park. It won't go. It will select everything else but park. The gear shifter is fine and the part on the lower column moves w/ the gear shifter, but it won't go into park. Any ideas? I will be pulling the wheel tomorrow.

it has to be something with the shift tube inside binding up. you have to take it apart and see whats messed up in there.

Thanks guys. Both of you have been oh so helpfull.

I will let everyone know what I find. Just to make things more interesting, it is a tilt column from a 79 XLT. Works like a charm up till last night. Tilt still works great. I actually have a spare tilt column in the garage so if all else fails, I can just swap it out, but I would really like to know why it failed.

Well, I stripped down the column and couldn't find anything so I put it back together and it worked fine. This tells me that it should break again on me at a later date.

thanks

i wish i could help you more. i havent had a column apart very far so im really unsure what could mess up inside of one of our columns. let alone a 79 tilt column sorry. did you take any pics for reference?

dablack00,

I agree with fordman on this one. Sounds like it's in the column.
If I'm not mistaken you should have to pull back on the shift lever when in the truck to change gears, (especially to go into park).
A safety feature? to prevent us from slamming into park at 55mph.

I would guess it's where the shift collar meet the lever assembly.
Aint' there a spring there that causes the lever to "flip" back toward the dash when released? (I've owned 71, 74, 76 and 79 trucks with the same type of lever but none were tilt).

Hope this helps.
