First off,
Welcome to the site.

Now, 4 spd could be one of two transmissions. Where is reverse?
over to the right and up? or over to the right and down?

Over and up is a T-18 Spicer
Over and down is a NP 435 (New Process)

As far as the sloppiness goes. That could be a lot of things. I would start with the obvious.
Pull the cover and check and make sure the cap that holds the shifter down is tight.
Then i'd check the pivot, make sure its got the right clearance and that your shifter isn't floating. (Forward, Backward, side to side)

If all that is good. Then its internal. At that point, i would replace it.
Cheaper to get a used 4 spd than totally overhaul one.

Good luck.

most T-18s found in our trucks have reverse up BUT T-18s made after 77 have reverse in the same spot as a NP435 and bolt right in.

top cover material and case shape is a better ID.

Aluminum top cover and a 10 /34" long case smooth on the drivers side = NP435

Iron top cover and an 11 7/8" long case ribbed on drivers side = T-18
