I have a 1970 Ford F100 Pickup that I need the shifter repaired. The
automatic transmission works great but I have to open the hood to put it in to
drive/park/reverse/neutral as the column shifter will not move the lever on the transmission. In other words when I move the shifter inside the truck nothing moves under the hood. So whatever connects the shifter inside the truck (on the column) to the lever that moves it into gear on the transmission is broken somewhere inside the column. I just need to know what parts I need and where to find them and what all needs to be removed to make the repair. A diagram of the steering column would be a great help.

Thanks for the fast reply, no the shifter lever is not floppy. One thing I forgot to mention is that there is a small lever on the column under the dash that engages a switch that allows the truck to start if it is in neutral or park. that small lever DOES still move when you move the shifter on the column inside the truck. so I'm guessing the break is somewhere very close to where the lever comes out of the column under the hood that attaches to the transmission as seen in my 3rd photo.edselehr wrote:is the shift lever "floppy"? You may have snapped or sheared the casting inside the shift collar. Pop the steering wheel off and see what you can see inside there. This will give you an idea of what you might have.

This is what the end of your shift tube looks like....or rather, should look like:
You can see there's a small tab spot-welded onto the end of the shift tube, and is what engages the lever. In many cases the tab has broken loose from the tube. There is a similar tab welded onto the other end of the tube which engages the shift collar, but based on your observations of the tube being intact at least as far as the neutral safety switch, I'm betting your problem is this bottom tab.
However, it's also possible that the lower section of tube has rusted/broken off. There's really no way of knowing for sure until you pull it apart. It's actually very easy. The info and pics on the following page will help you out:
