dropping tranny
Hey Guys ...
Finally got the CS in my buddies barn to drop the tranny and pull the engine...
Just had a quick question about dropping the 435.
I know I gotta pull the shifter out... before dropping the tranny.
If I remember right getting the cover piece that holds the shifter in, can be a bugger.
After I get everything disconnected, is there enough room underneath to pull it out, using a tranny jack, or will I have to jack it up and block it ??
I'm sure other questions will come up before this project is completed...
So I'll be taking some pics...

pretty sure you will have to jack it up a bit...with the shifter removed, you might be able to just tip it to one side and pull it out.

You can just tip the tranny, I did it last week w/o any problems with my NP435.

Use two screw drivers to twist the cap that holds the shifter cane in.
I pulled my 435 up threw the floor with an engine hoist. Easier that way if you are a one man crew. It is a tight fit thro the floor.

I dunno about the 435, but I know the T18 weighs almost as much as I do, and it's a bear wrestling it out from underneath with a regular floor jack. It doesn't like to sit in anyone position without rolling off.
An extra set of hands is a good thing, and lifting the truck some wouldn't hurt, but it will come out underneath without doing so.

Hey Paul...
Yeah... figured it would be a bugger with afloor jack so I got a regular tranny jack.
Is it better to pull the bell housing with the tranny or leave it on the engine?

I wouldn't, personally, but that's just me. Never tried it, the tranny was heavy enough by itself, and with the riveted crossmember in my truck right below the front of the tranny, I don't think it would come out as a whole anyways.
Do yourself a favor though, and here's my "tech tip of the day".
Go to your local hardware store and get a foot-long piece of all-thread in the size of the trans/bell bolts, 7/16"x14, and cut it in half. On the cut ends, cut a slot across them for a flat-head screwdriver, and use these in the top two bolt holes on the bellhousing. They act as guides, and help the tranny go up to the bellhousing much more smoothly, without the worries of the tranny slipping and pulling the throwout bearing off the clutch fork. Get the bottom bolts slightly snugged up, and then remove one stud, replacing it with a bolt, and then do the same with the other.
I know this works with a T18 (on the top, not enough room on the bottom though) but do not know if it will work with a 435. You'll need a couple inches extra space to remove the studs after bolting in the bottom two bolts.

I've never pulled on of these tranny's b4 so any tips like this helps tremendously.
It's cool to have had bump trucks this long and never really had to pull a tranny in one.
I can't even count the number of trannies I went through in my '68 GTO...
That thing would eat Muncie M-22's like Wheaties. I got to where I could actually swap tranny's in the GTO in 45 minutes or less, by myself.
I finally put a Saginaw in it because of the cast iron case... I din't bust any more trannies after that.
Now when we pulled the 390/c6 combo outta the '71 it was done in one piece, but we were also not worried about damaging anything...
It slid out of the '71 like butta.
Every other tranny I have pulled before, I have just bench pressed in and out... m-21's, m-22's, sags, c-4s etc...
I am 100% positive that I wanna be nowhere under that NP435 when it comes out.

Hey Kaptn, something else you might try.When you set the jack under your 435 ( or any trans) take a look at how it sits on the jack.I've often used short pieces of lumber to block it then I strap the trans to the jack with a ratcheting tie down strap.Even a 435 will make a pothole in a concrete floor if it falls off of the jack.
About 10 years ago I was pulling a 12 speed Mack trans ( 2000 lb give or take) and the jack broke.I didn't get hurt I did however s*** myself in 3 languages when it hit the floor.

Back when I was a young guy, I used to manhandle the 435s and the T18s and such, even did punkins on 18 wheelers by hand. I have also lost a Mack tranny off a jack, no fun. Now that I am a senior(68), I have come to the realization that I can't wrestle some things as well as I used to. The Harbor Freight 450 Lb scissor tranny jack came up on sale sometime back for 49 dollars and I bought one. It's wonderful. The last two tranny changes I did were a breeze, and I didn't get sore nor take a chance on dropping things. Not for heavy duty or continious use, but very capable for occasional use.

Last night I got my tools and stuff together to take them over to my friends place to start workin' on the CS...
I am excited about finally getting started on the CS project.
I have been waiting over a year now to get it started.
We were gonna do it last winter, but my buddy had a 3 foot diameter fir tree go thru the middle of his house in a Dec wind storm... $130,000.00 in damages to the house...ouch!!!
He ended up coming out ahead and actually making some money on it after having to fire the contractor.
That kinda put things on hold for a while.
