69 tranny fluid change?

Post by 04stangman »

Is it this easy?

1- drop the pan and let the fluid drain out.
2- clean off pan and tranny.
3- put some gasket sealer and a new gasket on....
4 replace bolts............

Or am I missing something? I am really new to this old truck stuff, and you all seem to really know your stuff! I need all the help I can get. Should I let a shop do the fluid change............. Or is it something a guy like me with little skills can accomplish? Thanks for any help I can get!

Change the filter or screen.

04stangman,

What tranny model?
Some fords had a ball bearing, (I believe some kind of check valve) above the filter. When you dropped the filter it came out, (don't lose it if you have this).

Some of Ford's four-wheel drive C-4's also had a short tube/pipe that ran through the filter, (if you got it make sure you put it back in).

Definately change the filter for sure.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't use gasket sealer, go out and buy a good gasket(not the cork stuff) and you not need sealer. With a good gasket the bolt holes hold some of the bolt so you can hold the pan and put them in. So what basketcase said be careful when pulling out the filter.

Its not hard to do. I think that you can to it. Is there something wrong with the fluid or just wanting to change it.

I see, are the bolts lose. I check that first and if not, then it needs a gasket.

04stangman,

Not really that hard to do, (sorry, I didn't mean for it to sound like it was).
If you can afford it, a nice thing for the future is one of these.

If your pan is leaking around the bolts, chances are someone has over-torqued the bolts and distorted the flange/lip of the pan.
It sucks to get the pan off and find it's not flat anymore, (yeah, you can peen it flat again but take a chance on it still leaking)?

you will also want to drain the toruqe converter to do a full fluid change. the converter has a square bolt in the front of it to drain it.

under the truck. on the front of the trans is a plate made of tin remove that. inside there is the converter. spin the engine by hand or with a screwdriver on the teeth. youll see them. until the square headed bolt comes into view. remove that and fluid will flow.

If the pan is warped you can get a large 8-10 inch file and flatten it back out if it's not too bad. While it's out, go and buy a 1.50 drain plug and install it by drilling a hole in the deep part of the pan (make sure it won't hit anything when you re-install the pan). It makes future drains a snap.

Here's a shot of the torque converter drain on the C6 behind my 460. It'll look similar to this:

I took this shot when I was documenting removal of the rounded-off flexplate nut....that's why it's all boogered-up.
