AOD Transmission & FE Engines

Post by Finleyphoto »

Just need a quick recap.

Will an AOD transmission work with a FE Engine? And if not, why not?

I'm on the job and don't have time to research it with the dial-up.

Thanks - Dennis

It isn't a straight bolt up, but there are a few adapters out there, and I believe there is even a company that cuts the OE bellhousing off and bolts on a new one...

I'll try to come up with links in a little while...

Anything's possible with money. I think there's a company that makes an adaptor but that sort of thing is usually expensive. The AOD transmission was mediocre at best, not known for its reliability. Good luck.

Legendary ford also did an article on:

Bristol Services Company Gary Croan
711 W 17th St
Costa Mesa, CA 92627
Tel. +1 949.722.1122

I believe that he is the one that grafts a new bellhousing on.

I seem to recall that PA made a bellhousing for conversion but can't find it on their website, perhaps I'm thinking of a C4.

I expect you can plan on spending 2000-3000 by the time you get it adapted an built to stand up to the power.

I think it would make a nice package though.

Reliability in a AOD is all in the set up ! I have one in my bump side but its behind a 302. Can't say I've ever seen a FE with a AOD though. And if your throw money around, just use a C4 or C6 with Gear vender behind it. It'll only run about 2-4k dollars :)

How long its going to last all depends on how well you build it and what parts you use. I know 500hp cars and trucks that run a aod. One thing you will have problems with is exhaust. My long tubes on my 302 lay against the aod on the passager side. So you would have to run stock manifolds or mod. the headers.

Wow you guys really believe in those FE engines. I have only had 1 390, but quite a few 360s. They were one weak engine for how much they weigh. I love my old Fords but the only FE V8s worth talking about were the 406/410/427/428s 360/390s were a big waste of time in the pickups. Poor fuel economy and NO power. I think an AOD built well would outlast several 360s maybe even a 390.
Only reason to keep an FE in your truck is to keep it stock for purists/show. A 460 stock will run circles around a 360/390 .

I even considered pulling the original 360 2V(rebuilt right)out of the Merc and building a 460 so we could actually use it for something other than trying to drag it's lazy ass around to shows/cruise nites.

The FE has a very stout block and thats about it.
OK maybe a 427 SOHC is good . But ?????????

Hey nobody is wrong. Some are just more right. :P

Seriously I would love to put another FE in my 68 Merc, but it sure wouldn't be a 360 or 390. I'm still watching for an old 410 or a 428.
 I missed out on a couple basket case 427SOHC motors that came with enough extra parts to complete almost 3 engines. Oh yeah that was over 20 yrs ago.

This place is a wealth of information . :fr:
