F-800 rear axle question

Post by kawasakifreak77 »

Ok, my friend (who is a mostly chevy guy) got a '65 model F-800. The brakes were barely working on the rear-end. We took it apart & the ring piece that is bolted around the axle tube where your shoes sit at the bottom & your cam (it has air brakes) goes through the top is snapped in two pieces. I believe it has an eaton rear axle. Where could I find the part to replace this? We've tried local truck/tractor shops, junkyards, etc. Any help would be greatly appriciated & I wish I had a camera to take a picture of it, but I don't. Thanks in advance for any help!

What you are describing is often called a brake spider.I would suggest finding any numbers on it you can. Also if there are any numbers on the shoes or cam it would be a good idea to write them down. The next step is using the numbers to identify the manufacturer. It is likely an Eaton axle but it doesn't necessarily guarantee it has Eaton brakes.

The next thing I would do is find a dealer who carries Euclid parts. The Euclid name usually brings to mind huge off road dump trucks but there is a Euclid company that makes aftermarket heavy duty brake and wheel end parts. They have catalogs with exploded views of brake systems that go back many years.

Another suggestion is to ask someone to get some pics of the spider and shoes and e-mail them to you.The old proverb " A picture is worth a thousand words" holds true.

Sorry for the long post but, well I have this thing for mechanical dinosaurs.

Thanks for the advice, I have no way of putting pictures up here 'cause the local library is my only internet source. No we can't weld it 'cause it's been buggered up so badly that if you line up the pieces on one end, the other end of 'em will be off by about 1/2 inch. Thanks again for the info, it does have a few numbers on there, if I post them up here will someone be able to figure out what we have, I'll try to find one of these "Euclid" places too.
